Butts Field was an arable field of about two acres, situated to the west of Port Lane in the corner of Neltro common field. In the Tithe Award it was measured as 2 acres and 12 perches.

Its name come from the fact that it would have been where the men of the village conducted their compulsory archery practice in mediæval and Tudor times (the butts being earth banks behind the targets to stop stray arrows).

In the mid-18th century, Butts Field was owned by George Rempnant. George died in 1774 and Butts Field passed to his daughter, Mary, wife of Thomas Searle.

Mary died in 1802 and the estate passed to her sons, Thomas, William and James Searle. The three sons sold their shares and Butts Field passed into the ownership of James Trigg. In 1811 James Trigg sold Butts Field to John Hone. In 1812 John Hone sold it to William Chandler.

William Chandler died intestate in 1871 and Butts Field passed to his son, also William. William jnr died in 1886 and in 1888 Butts Field was sold (along with other land) to Louisa Amelia Wing.

Butts Field is now covered by the houses of Arethusa Way.
