Sutton Place, Woking near Guildford

Sutton Place is an ancient manor-house on the banks of the River Wey in Surrey.  It lies just within the ancient parish boundary of Woking, about 4 miles from Guildford, and was built between 1520 and 1530 by Sir Richard Weston.  Prior to this time, most grand country houses were built as castles or fortified houses.  Sutton Place was one of the first in the country to be built without fortifications.

In 1893, Macmillan & Co. published a history of Sutton Place - Annals of an Old Manor House - by Frederic Harrison.  Harrison was encouraged to produce the work by Francis Henry Salvin, then owner of the house and estate.  The book contains about 60 plates which are reproduced here.

Later (in the 1910s?), a six page summary of Harrison's work was produced, along with 12 new illustrations.  These are also reproduced here.
