aka WISDOM CORNER
Vanits was a cottage and tenement situated near to the western end of the parish close to the boundary with Pirbright parish. In the Tithe Award it was measured as 1 Acre 2 roods and 33 perches; described on the OS Map as 1.323 acres. Vanits and the field next to it(288) were also known as Wisdom Corner. Nowadays, Wisdom Corner is marked by the sharp bend in Queens Road as it turns past the 600 yard firing point on the NRA's Century Range.
In the first half of the 18th century, Vanits was held (copyhold) by James Harding. James died in 1750 and his son, also James, inherited. James junior died 1752 and Vanits passed to his wife, Mary.
In 1757, Mary sold Vanits to Thomas Wisdom, a husbandman from Yately, Hants. Thomas sold Vanits to William Thick, Frimley, in 1768.
William Thick died in 1772 and Vanits passed to his son, also William (who was only twelve at the time - his mother, Rachel, was appointed guardian).
In 1783, William junior, now a wheelright of Woking, died; his son, also William, was his heir.
In 1829, Sarah Roake, wife of John Roake, formerly Sarah Thick died. In her will she left Vanits to her husband. Sarah is thought to be the daughter of William the wheelwright.
John Roake died in 1847 and Vanits passed to his son, David. In 1853, David sold Vanits, along with other property, to George Drury, an auctioneer of Guildford.
In October 1890 George Drury, sold the properties to Lieutenant Colonel Alfred Paget Humphrey. In 1894, Alfred sold the properties to George Frederick of Wales Duke of York, upon trust for Principal Secretary of State for War.
