PRO WILL The National Archives Cat Ref: Prob 11/1870 HARRISON ANN ELIZABETH Spinster of Ripley Surrey Executed: 17 Dec 1816 with 6 Codicils Proved 17 Dec 1836 This is the Last Will and Testament of me Ann Elizabeth HARRISON of Ripley in the County of Surrey Spinster whereas my father Robert HARRISON late of Ripley aforesaid Squire deceased by his Last Will and Testament in writing duly executed and attested bearing date the Twenty ninth day of November One thousand eight hundred and twenty one and devised unto Rowland HUNT of Lincolns Inn Esquire & James Kevis WATSON of Hull Banker all his Manors lands and Hereditaments in the parish of Aldborough / Benningholme / Benningholme Grange and Fairholme in the East Riding of York and their and every of their rights [?] and appurtenances and also to nine fields containing together 83 acres thereabouts in the town ship of Mansion in Aldborough in the same County and also his capitol freehold Messuage and Mansion House together with the offices gardens Lands Hereditaments and appurts to the same belonging then in his own occupation situate at Ripley aforesaid in the Parish of Send in the County of Surrey and also all those several other freehold Messuages or Tenements piece or parcels of land and heredits at Ripley aforesaid there in the several occupations of Mary CROWTHER ~ John FARTHING ~ and Mrs TOWERTON and also in that Cottage Barn and Garden at Ripley as for and which he had lately purchased of the Rev George CHATFIELD and also all those two freehold houses with the Garden Stable Barnyard and Gateways situate in Ripley Lane in the Parish of Send aforesaid and also all those several Copyhold Cottages or Tenements Land and premises holden of the Manor of Ripley and Send aforesaid and to which he the said Testator was entitled during the life of Elizabeth JARRATT and also all other his estate whatever situate and being at Ripley aforesaid in the Parish of Send to hold the same unto the said Rowland HUNT and James Kevis WATSON and their heirs to the said several uses and upon and for the several trusts intents and purposes and under and subject to several [? Line 8 p2.] and declaration thereinafter limited express and declared concerning the same that is to say as to and concerning the same Manors Hereditaments and premises in Aldbrough ~ Benningholme ~ Benningholme Grange and Fairholme aforesaid and the said fields in the township of [MEAUX?] aforesaid to the use of the said Rowland HUNT and James Kevis WATSON their heirs and assigns during my natural life Upon Trust for my use and benefit in manner therein mentioned and after my decease in case I should leave no children or child living at my decease the said Testators attested that the said Trustees and their heirs should stand seized of all and singular the said Manors Townships farms lands Heredits and premises in the said parishes of Aldbrough ~ Benningholme ~ Benningholme Grange and Fairholme aforesaid together with the said fields in the township of [MEAUX?] aforesaid with their and every of their rights members and appurtenances to the only use and behalf of his (the said Testator?s) Grandson Robert HARRISON his heirs and assigns forever and as to and concerning the said capitol and other freehold and copyhold Messuages Cottages Lands Hereditaments and premises in Ripley aforesaid the said Testator directed that they the said Trustees and their heirs should stand seized thereof respectively to the use of me the said Ann Elizabeth HARRISON for and during the term of my natural life and from and immediately after my decease to the use of all and every the child and children of me the said ANN ELIZABETH HARRISON equally (if more than one) share and share alike as Tenants in common entail with rights remainders in all between them (if more than one) and if but one to such only child entail and in default of such issue the said Testator directs that they his said Trustees and their heirs should stand seized of all and singular the said Capital and other freehold and Copyhold Messuages Cottages and Hereditaments and premises in Ripley aforesaid to the use of such person or persons for such estate and estates and in such part thereof and proportions and in such manner as I the said ANN ELIZABETH HARRISON by any Deed or Deeds Testament or Testaments in writing to be sealed and delivered by me in the presence of and attested by two or more credible Witnesses or by my Last Will and Testament in writing to be signed and published by me in the presence of and attested by three or more credible Witnesses should [? ] direct or appoint give or devise the same and in default of such direction limitation or appointment [?] or devise and subject thereto to such other uses as in the said Will are mentioned and directed and wherever it was after the decease of my said Father that retains [?] or piece of Land called [Arnold Car] in the Parish of Arnold in the said County of York containing by [?] ment nine acres three roods and eleven perches thereabouts in the occupation of Benjamin ROBINSON was by mistake omitted to be included in the ?devise of the Aldbrough and Benningholme Estate to which or to some part whereof the said last is mentioned as near or adjoining and whereas in consequence of such omission the said piece or pieces of Land called Arnold Car and become vested in me as the Residual devisee in my said fathers Will of all the Real Estate not thereby specifically devised and whereas I am well satisfied that it was my fathers intention that the said place or piece of land called Arnold Car should have been included in the same devise as the Aldborough and Benningholme Estate now therefore in order to fulfil such intentions of my said father and to carry the same into effect I the said ANN ELIZABETH HARRISON do give and devise unto my Nephew the aforesaid Robert HARRISON (the second and only Younger son of my sister Sarah STEERE and who a short time previous to my father?s death changed his name from STEERE to HARRISON by virtue of His Majesty?s Royal Sinecure and Authority) all that the above piece of land called Arnold Car situate lying and being in the Parish of Arnold in the said County of York with the appurtenances to the same belonging together with all such other Lands and Hereditaments in the said County of York (if any) which became vested in me as the Residuary Devisee in the said Will of my late father as aforesaid to hold all and singular the said piece or pieces of land called Arnold Car and all such other Lands and Hereditaments as vested in me as aforesaid (if any) with their and every of their appurtenances unto and to the use of my said Nephew Robert HARRISON his heirs and assigns for ever and I give and bequeath unto the said Robert HARRISON all the household goods furniture plate linen china live and dead stock and other effects whatsoever which shall be in and about or belonging to the Capital Messuage or Mansion House at Benningholme aforesaid and the offices and premises thereunto belonging at the time of my decease together also with two silver cups which were given by the late Mrs Catherine BIRT to my late Uncle Thomas HARRISON squire deceased Also give and bequeath unto the said Robert HARRISON all my share and interest in the HULL DOCKS and all the shares which I hold in the HULL GAS COMPANY and whereas under the aforesaid power contained in the said Will of my said late father I am enabled to dispose either by Deed or Will of all and singular the said capital and other freehold and copyhold Messuages Land and Hereditaments at Ripley aforesaid in any manner I choose in case I shall die without issue now therefore I the said ANN ELIZABETH HARRISON in ?.. ?? of the power and authority given to and vested in me and by the said Will of my said father Robert HARRISON deceased as aforesaid and of all and every other power and powers authority and authorities in me vested or in any ?. enabling me in that he shall do by this my Last Will and Testament signed sealed and published by me in the presence of three credible persons whose names will be hereupon endorsed as witness to the execution by me of this my Will and Testament and appoint and give unto my Brother in law Lee Steere STEERE Esquire and the aforesaid James Kevis WATSON and to their heirs the aforesaid capital Messuage or Mansion House at Ripley aforesaid together with the offices gardens Lands Hereditaments and Appurtenances whatever to the same belonging now in my own occupation and also all those several other freehold Messuages or Tenements Lands [?] or parcels of Land and Hereditaments at Ripley aforesaid now or late in the several occupations of Mary CROWTHER ~ John FARTHING ~ and Mrs. TOWERTON and also in that Cottage Barn and Garden at Ripley aforesaid purchased by my said father of the Rev. George CHATFIELD and also all those two freehold houses with the garden Stable Barn yard and gateway situate and being in Ripley same in the Parish of Send aforesaid and also and all these several Copyhold Cottages or Tenements lands and premises holden of the Manor of Ripley and Send and to which I am entitled during the life of Elizabeth JARRATT as aforesaid with their and every of their appurtenances all which said Capital and other freehold and copyhold Messuages Cottages Lands Hereditaments and premises were so devised by the said Will of my said late father as aforesaid also I give and devise unto the said Lee Steere STEERE and James Kevis WATSON and their heirs all those several Copyhold Cottages situate and being in Ripley aforesaid of or to which I am seized or entitled in my own right and in which said cottages are now in the several occupations of John PALMER ~ Widow HUNT ~ Daniel WRIGHT ~ Richard WOOLWARD ~ William HUNT with the appurtenances to the same Cottages respectively belonging To hold the said Capitol Messuage or Mansion House and all and singular of the freehold and Copyhold Messuages Cottages Lands Hereditaments and premises therein before limited and appointed and given and devised respectively with their and every of their appurtenances unto and to the use of the said Lee Steere STEER and James Kevis WATSON their heirs and assigns forever nevertheless in upon and for the Trusts intents and purposes hereinafter expressed and declared of and concerning the same that is to say as to and concerning the said Capitol Messuage or Mansion House offices Gardens Lands Hereditaments and Appurtenances now in my own occupation upon Trust to permit and suffer my sister in law Lucy Henrietta HARRISON the widow of my late brother John HARRISON esquire deceased to live and reside in the said Mansion House of Ripley aforesaid and to have the use and occupation of the offices Gardens Lands and appurtenances to the same belonging as I now hold the same for her own use and benefit during the life of or during as long as she shall continue Brothers widow or during so long as she shall continue to live and reside therein but my will is that she shall not be at liberty to let or [set*] the same to any person or persons whomsoever and I do hereby declare my will to be that the said Lucy Henrietta HARRISON shall have the use and enjoyment of the household goods furniture and utensils Books plate linen china and use and [?] Stock and Effects which shall be in and about or belonging to my said Mansion House offices and premises at Ripley aforesaid at the time of my decease (except the full set of coloured china which I give and bequeath to my sister Sarah STEERE for her own use and benefit and also except such other pieces of china as my said sister Sarah STEERE shall choose to select for her own use which I do hereby authorize her to do) and I do hereby further direct and appoint that from and immediately after the decease or marriage of my said sister-in-law Lucy Henrietta HARRISON or in case she shall not make my said Mansion House at Ripley aforesaid her principal and general residence my said Trustees and their heirs shall stand seized of the said Capitol Messuage or Mansion House offices gardens lands hereditaments and appurtenances now in my own occupation in Trust for my two nieces Lucy HARRISON and Sarah Elizabeth HARRISON the daughters of my sister-in-law Lucy Henrietta HARRISON equally share and share alike and for their respective heirs and assigns for ever as tenants in common and I do hereby direct that it shall be Lawful for my said Trustees among the respective minorities of my said nieces Lucy HARRISON and Sarah Elizabeth HARRISON after the decease or second marriage of their Mother the said Lucy Henrietta HARRISON in case she shall not make the principal residence as aforesaid to devise and leave the said Capitol Messuage or Mansion House Offices Garden Lands Hereditaments and premises to any person or persons whomsoever all such rent or rents as they my said Trustees or the survivor of them his Executors or Admons shall think reasonable for any rents or in any term not [???] exceeding seven years and I direct that the rent or rents of the said premises shall from time to time during the respective lives of my said nieces be lent out and invested by my said Trustees or the survivor of them his Executors or Administrators in some or one of the public stocks or funds of Great Britain in their or his names or name in order to accumulate for the benefit of my said nieces at their respective ages of twenty one years or on their respective marriage which shall first happen and then to be transferred and made over to them for their own use and benefit respectively and as to and concerning all and singular I direct the freehold and copyhold Messuages Cottages Lands Hereditaments and Premises herein before listed due appointed and given and devised respectively upon Trust for they my said Trustees and the survivor of them or his heirs do and shall pay to or otherwise permit and suffer my said Sister in law Lucy Henrietta HARRISON and her assigns to reserve and take the rents issues and profits of all and singular the said last mentioned freehold and copyhold Messuages Cottages Lands Hereditaments and premises at Ripley aforesaid to and for her and their own use and benefit during her life or widowhood and from and immediately after the decease or future marriage of the said Lucy Henrietta HARRISON upon Trust that they my said Trustees and their heirs shall stand seized of all and singular the said last mentioned premises in Trust to my said nieces Lucy HARRISON and Sarah Elizabeth HARRISON equally share and share alike and for their respective heirs and assigns for ever as tenants in common provided nevertheless that if both of them the said Lucy HARRISON and Sarah Elizabeth HARRISON shall die under the age of twenty-one years and without issue living at the time of their respective deceases then my will is and I do hereby further direct and appoint that they my said Trustees and their heirs shall stand seized of the said Capitol Messuages or Mansion House and their Gardens Lands and appurtenances thereunto belonging and also of all and singular other freehold and copyhold Messuage Cottages Land Heredits and premises hereinbefore directed and appointed and given and devised respectively with their and every of their appurtenances in Trust to my two nieces Elizabeth STEERE and Sarah STEERE the daughters of my said sister Sarah STEERE and their respective heirs and assigns for ever as Tenants in common and I direct that the household goods furniture and utensils Books plate linen china and effects which shall be in and about or belonging to my said Mansion House Offices and Premises at RIPLEY aforesaid shall remain therein and thereupon and be preserved as near as may be allowing for reasonable wear and tear and unavoidable [??] for the benefit of the persons respectively who shall or may become absolutely entitled to an estate of inheritance in the said Mansion House and premises by virtue of this my Will under the contingencies therein before expressed and to whom I give and bequeath the same accordingly and for the better preservation thereof I direct that my Executors shall as soon as conveniently may be after my decease raise an Inventory or an Account to be taken of the said Household Goods furniture and other things at the time of my decease and that the same shall be signed by my said Executors and the said Lucy Henrietta HARRISON or such persons shall or may be for the time being occupy the said Mansion House and premises and to whom a duplicate of such Inventory or account shall be delivered I give and bequeath unto my said Brother in law Lee Steere STEERE the sum of one thousand pounds and to his oldest son Lee STEERE Esquire the sum of one thousand pounds also I give and bequeath unto my said sister in law Lucy Henrietta HARRISON the sum of one thousand pounds and to each of my nieces Lucy HARRISON ~ Sarah Elizabeth HARRISON ~ Elizabeth STEERE ~ and Sarah STEERE the sum of one thousand pounds and I direct that the said respective legacies to the said Lucy HARRISON and Sarah Elizabeth HARRISON shall be paid out and invested by my Executors in some or one of the ?? Public Funds of Great Britain in two separate accounts in the joint names of themselves the said Lucy HARRISON and Sarah Elizabeth HARRISON and I direct that they my said Executors shall from time to time receive the dividends and annual proceeds thereof respectively and pay the same to their Mother the said Lucy Henrietta HARRISON for and towards their respective maintenance and education during their respective minorities or until they shall respectively marry and shall then transfer and make over the Stocks or funds in or upon which the said legacies shall be respectively invested unto my said nieces respectively I give and bequeath unto my friend Mrs BOWYER of Weymouth Street Portland Place the widow of BOWYER Esquire and her sister Mrs Martha HAMMOND the sum of fifty pounds a piece in token of affectionate remembrance I give and bequeath unto my friend Mrs ROBERTS and to her sister Miss STOW both of Ripley aforesaid the sum of Twenty five pounds a piece as a token of regard I give and bequeath unto my late dear mothers God-daughter Charlotte ONSLOW fourth daughter of the Reverend George Walton ONSLOW Vicar of Send and Ripley aforesaid the sum of five hundred pounds I also give and bequeath unto my late fathers Godson Arthur Foot ONSLOW the seventh son of the said George Walton ONSLOW the sum of five hundred pounds and I direct that the said several legacies of five hundred pounds and five hundred pounds be paid out and invested by my Executors in manner thereinafter mentioned that is to say the legacies of five hundred pounds to the said Charlotte ONSLOW in the names of herself and her father the said George Walton ONSLOW and the legacy or stocks of five hundred pounds to the said Arthur Foot ONSLOW invested in the names of himself and the said George Walton ONSLOW may nominate and appoint and I do hereby direct that the dividends and such proceeds of the stocks or funds in or upon which the said respective legacies shall be so laid out or invested shall from time to time be also laid out and invested in order to accumulate for the benefit of the said Charlotte ONSLOW at her age of twenty one years or on her marriage whichever shall first happen and for the benefit of the said Arthur Foot ONSLOW at his age of twenty one years and then to transfer and make over to them respectively I give and bequeath unto my Coachman William EASDEN (?) to my Cook Ann TAYLOR and to my Maid Susanna GUILDING the sum of one hundred pounds a piece if they shall respectively be living with me at the time of my decease Also I give and bequeath unto my Butler Samuel WRIGHT if living with me at the time of my decease the sum of Sixty pounds and to my Footman James MILLER my Housemaid Sarah GRIFFITHS and my Dairymaid Elizabeth FORRESTER the sum of fifty pounds a piece if they shall be respectively living with me at the time of my decease and I give and bequeath all the Residue & Remainder of my monies securities for money Goods Chattels and Personal estate and effects whatsoever not herein before specifically bequeathed after payment of my debts legacies and funeral expenses and the charges of proving this my Will unto my sister Sarah STEERE her Executors administrators and assigns to and for her and their own absolute use and benefit and I do hereby nominate and appoint my sister Sarah STEERE and the said James Kevis WATSON Executrix and Executor of this my Will and I give and bequeath unto the said James Kevis WATSON the sum of Two hundred pounds for the trouble he will have in and about the execution of this my Will and I do hereby declare that it shall be lawful for my said Trustees and Executors respectively by and out of the monies which shall come to their respective hands by virtue of this my Will to account and retain all such [?] charges damages and expenses as they and every or any of them shall or may pay bear sustain expend or be put into in or about the execution of this my Will or in any wise relating thereto and I do hereby revoke all former Wills by me at any time heretofore made in Witness whereof I the said ANN ELIZABETH HARRISON have to this my Last Will and Testament contained in Ten sheets of paper put my hand to each of the first nine sheets of paper and the tenth and last sheet I have set my hand and seal this Twenty seventh day of May in the Year of our Lord One thousand Eight hundred and Twenty two A. Ripley in the County of Surrey but now residing at Cheltenham in the County of Gloucester which Will bears date the Twenty seventh day of May One thousand Eight hundred and Twenty Two I give and devise unto James Kevis WATSON of the Town and County of the town of Kingston upon Hull ~ Banker ~ (one of the Executors named in my said Will) and to Rowland HUNT of Lincoln?s Inn in the County of Middlesex Esquire and to their heirs all that Capital Messuage or Tenement called or known by the name of Wood Cliff House situate and being on the West Cliff adjoining or near to the Town of Brighton situate and being in the County of Sussex together with the piece or parcel of ground and appurtenances thereunto belonging and which said premises I have lately purchased of Doctor KING and Jn David SCOTT Baronet to hold the same unto and to the use of the said James Kevis WATSON and Rowland HUNT their heirs and assigns for ever never the less upon and for the trusts intents and purposes hereinafter expressed and declared of and containing the same that is to say upon Trust that they the said James Kevis WATSON and Rowland HUNT or the survivor of them or his heirs do and shall convert and dispose of the said Capitol Messuage or Tenement piece or parcel of ground and premises so demised to them as aforesaid to such use upon such Trusts for such intents and purposes and in such parts and proportions manner and form in all respects as my sister Sarah STEERE the wife of Lee Steere STEERE esquire not withstanding her [? ?] and whatever invest or sale at any time or times during her life by any Deed or Deeds Instrument or Instruments in writing to be sealed and delivered by her in the presence of and attested by two or more credible Witnesses or by her Last Will and Testament in writing or any Codicil or Codicils there to be signed and published by them in the presence of and attested by three or more credible Witnesses shall direct or appoint and direct of and until such direction or appointment shall be made and in the presence and subject thereto upon Trust that they the said James Kevis WATSON and Rowland HUNT and the survivor of them or their heirs do and shall during the natural life of my said sister Sarah STEERE apply and dispose of the rents and profits of the said Capitol Messuage or Tenement piece or parcel of ground and premises so devised to them and aforesaid unto such person or persons for which intents and purposes and in such parts and proportions manner and form as my said sister Sarah STEERE by any writing or writings under her hand shall from time to time direct or appoint and in default of such direction or appointment do and shall pay the same into the proper hands of my said sister Sarah STEERE or otherwise authorize and therein empower her to receive the same for her sole and separate use independent of her husband the said Lee Steere STEERE and not to be subject to or liable to his debts restrictions or engagements and for which the receipt in writing of my said sister and of the person or persons to whom she shall direct the same to be paid as aforesaid shall from time to time be a sufficient discharge to my said Trustees and the survivor of them and his heirs and to the person or persons who shall or may pay the same as and in aforesaid and in default of any such duration or appointment by my said sister Sarah STEERE for the conveyance and distribution of the said premises by my said Trustees under the power for that purpose therein before contained then my will is and I do hereby direct that they James Kevis WATSON and Rowland HUNT and their heirs shall stand and be seized of all and singular the said Capital Messuage or Tenement piece or parcel of ground and premises so devised to them as aforesaid from and after the decease of my said sister Sarah STEERE to the use of her own right heirs for ever and whereas my late Father Robert HARRISON Esquire deceased by his last Will and Testament in writing and executed and attested bearing date the twenty ninth day of November one thousand eight hundred and twenty gave and devised unto Sir William KAY of Mansion House Street in the City of London Baronet and to the said James Kevis WATSON all that his freehold Messuage or Tenement and premises with the appurtenances in Mansion House Street aforesaid then occupied by Joseph MARRYATT Esquire and his partners as a Banking House and also all that other freehold Messuage or Tenement and premises with the appurtenances in Mansion House Street aforesaid then in the occupation of Thomas EVERETT Esquire his under tenants or assigns and also those two other freehold Messuages or Tenements and premises with the appurtenances situate and being in Paines Street near to Mansion House Street aforesaid in the City of London to hold the same in and to the use of the said Sir William KAY and James Nevis WATSON and their heirs upon and for the several Trusts intents and purposes and under and subject to the several powers provided and declared and hereinafter limited expressed and declared requiring the same and which said Trust s are for the benefit of my aforesaid sister Sarah STEERE and her Children and whereas my said father and in his said Will gave devised and bequeathed all the residue and remainder of his rent and personal estate specifically devised and bequeathed after payment of his debts legacies and funeral expenses unto me the said ANN ELIZABETH HARRISON my heirs Executors administrators and assigns respectively for ever and whereas since the decease of my said father it hath been discovered that there were three Messuages or Tenements (or more) in Princes Street aforesaid which belonged to him at the time of his decease although only two are mentioned in the said Will and whereas in consequence thereof rents of the said Messuages or Tenements in Princes Street to which my said father was so entitled as aforesaid and were not mentioned in the devise therein contained to the said Sir William KAY and James Kevis WATSON as aforesaid as upon his decease resolve upon and become vested in me by virtue of his said Will as the residuary Leaser of his Real Estate and whereas I am well satisfied that it was my fathers intention that the whole of his property in Princes Street aforesaid should pass by the said Will to the said Trustees to whom the said two Messuages in Princes Street aforesaid was so devised upon the Trusts therein contained excepting the same as aforesaid and that the omission thereof was entirely accidental and the [?] mistake now thereof in order to [?] effect such the obvious intention of my said father I do hereby give and devise unto the said Sir William KAY and James Kevis WATSON and their heirs and all such interest and interests what so ever of and in all and every or any the freehold Messuage or Tenements and Premises situate and being in Princes Street aforesaid in the City of London with their appurtenances and or to which my said late father Robert HARRISON was seized or in any way entitled at the time of his decease as devolved upon and became vested in me under and by virtue of the devise of the residue of the Real Estate contained in his said Will as aforesaid to hold the same estate and interest unto and to the said use of the said Sir William KAY and James Kevis WATSON and their heirs upon and for such of the same Trusts intents and purposes under and subject to such and the same purpose and purposes and declarations as are limited expressed and declared of and receiving the said two Freehold Messuages or Tenements and premises in Princes Street aforesaid as devised to the said Sir William KAY and James Kevis WATSON and their heirs in and by my fathers said will as aforesaid or as near thereto as may be I give and bequeath unto Reverend Henry John RIDLEY of Abinger in the County of Surrey Cleric the sum of One hundred pounds as a token of remembrance I give and bequeath unto each of my friends Mrs ROBERTS and Mrs HOW the sum of Twenty-five pounds in addition to the legacies or sums I have given to them respectively by my said Will I give and bequeath unto my Maid Servant Susannah GUILDING all the furniture and effects which shall be in or belonging to her own Bed Room in my house at Ripley aforesaid at the time of my decease I give and bequeath unto Ann TAYLOR my late Cook the sum of One hundred pounds and to James MILLER my late footman the sum of Fifty pounds and I direct that my sister Sarah STEERE shall be at liberty to select
