GEORGE CHILD 1755 In the name of God Amen. I George Child of Richmond in the County of Surrey Vintner do make publish and declare this my last will and testament in manner following (that is to say) first I give and devise all that my Messuage or Tenement situate lying and being on the South side of Richmond Green in the County of Surrey with the appurtenances now in the tenure or occupation of Mrs Turnball and the Rents Issues and Profits thereof unto my loving wife Ann Child from and immediately after my decease for and during the term of her natural life. And from and after her decease then I give and devise the same and the rents Issues and Profits thereof unto my sister Martha Laggatt wife of Phillip Laggatt of Richmond aforesaid Stonemason for and during the term of her natural life and for her own sole and separate use benefit and disposal notwithstanding her Coverture and not to be subject to or liable to debts or control of her present or any future husband. And from and immediately after the decease of the said Martha Laggatt then I give and devise the said Messuage and Tenement with the appurtenances and the rents issues and Profits thereof unto her two children Phillip Laggatt and Ann Laggatt and the survivors of them and the issue of such survivor. Also I give and devise all these my Freehold Lands situate lying and being in the parish of Kingston upon Thames in the County of Surrey now in the Tenure or Occupation of Mr ??. Lester [thus in the original] with the rents issues and profits thereof unto my said wife Ann Child from and immediately after my decease for and during the term of her natural life. And after her decease I give and devise the same unto my Nephew George Child and his Sister Elizabeth Child and the survivor of them and the heirs of such survivor. Also I give and devise all those my Freehold and Copyhold Lands Tenements and Hereditaments situate lying and being in the parish of Isleworth in the County of Middlesex now in the several Tenures or Occupations of Mr ??Ryde [thus in the original] and Mr Clement and the rents issues and Profits thereof unto my Sister Elizabeth Child from and immediately after my decease for and during the term of her natural life and after her decease then I give and devise the same unto my Niece Elizabeth Child her heirs and Assignees forever. Also I give and devise all that my Messuage or Tenement situate and being on the South side of Richmond Green aforesaid being at present untenanted adjoining to the aforesaid Messuage or Tenement in the Occupation of the aforesaid Mrs Turnball together with my Stable in Pensioners Alley in Richmond aforesaid and the rents issues and profits of the said Messuage Tenement and Stable with their and each of their appurtenances unto my sister Ann Wright wife of William Wright of Compton Street Soho in the County of Middlesex Oilman from and immediately after my decease for and during the term of her natural life to and for her own sole separate use benefit and disposal notwithstanding her Coverture and not to be subject to or liable to the debts or control of her present or any future husband. And from and after her decease then I give and devise the Land and the rents issues and profits thereof unto her said husband the said William Wright for and during the term of his natural life. And from and immediately after his decease I give and devise the same and the rents issues and profits thereof unto and amongst my Nephews and Nieces George Child and his Sister Elizabeth Child Phillip Laggatt and his Sister Ann Laggatt and Ann Milbourne to them and their heirs to be equally divided between them share and share alike. Also I give and devise all that my Copyhold Cottage with the Appurtenances situate and being at Twickenham Common in the County of Middlesex now or late in the several Tenures or Occupations of ?????.[thus in the original] Leonard and Johnson unto my Brother Phillip Laggatt of Richmond aforesaid his heirs and Assignees forever. Also I give and devise all that my Freehold Cottage with the Appurtenances situate and being at Wraysbury in the County of Bucks in the Tenure or Occupation of the officers of the parish of Wraysbury unto my Cousin Shadrach Child his heirs and Assignees forever. Also I give and devise all that my Copyhold Messuage or Tenement situate standing being in Richmond aforesaid in the Street leading up to Richmond Hill late in the Tenure or Occupation of ???..[thus in the original] Starkey Esquire with the Appurtenances unto my Nephew George Child his heirs and Assignees forever. Also I give and devise my three Copyhold Messuages or Tenements situate and being in Water Land in Richmond aforesaid now in the Several Tenures or Occupations of ???.Love ??..Downes and ???..North [thus in the original] unto my Nephew Phillip Laggatt and his Sister Ann Laggatt or the Survivor of them and the heirs of such Survivor. Also I give and devise all that my Copyhold Messuage or Tenement situate and being at Isleworth in the County of Middlesex now or late in the Tenure or Occupation of the Reverend Mr Peters to my Brother William Wright of Compton Street aforesaid and his heirs and Assignees forever. All which testamentary Copyhold Messuages Lands Tenements and Hereditaments have been already surrendered to the wish of my last Will and Testament according to the custom of the Several Manors to which they respectively belong. Also I give and devise unto my said Wife Ann Child over and besides what she is entitled to by virtue of her Marriage Settlement the sum of two hundred pounds and all and singular my Plate my China Ware with ten pair of Sheets twelve Pillowcases twenty four Napkins furniture for three rooms complete together with Kitchen furniture to be by her then taken and collected out of all or any part of such Household Goods as I shall be possessed of at the time of my decease wheresoever the same may then be. All which said Several Legacies hereby given and devised unto my said Wife are meant and intended and I do hereby declare the same to be in Lieu and full Barr of all Dower which she shall or may be entitled unto by any Law custom or otherwise howsoever. Also I give to my Sister Ann Wright and her husband William Wright one hundred pounds apiece. Also I give unto my Sister Martha Laggatt and her husband Phillip Laggatt one hundred pounds apiece. Also I give to my Sister Elizabeth Child Nephew George Child and Niece Elizabeth Child one hundred pounds apiece. Also I give to my Nephew Phillip Laggatt and his Sister Ann Laggatt one hundred pounds apiece. Also I give to my Niece Ann Milbourne and her husband John Milbourne one hundred pounds apiece. Also I give to Mr Edward Wright Brother of the aforesaid William Wright Twenty pounds. Also I give to my Cousin Thomas Child if he shall be living at the time of my decease fifty pounds but in case of his death then I give the same to his wife and children or such of them as shall be living at the time of my decease to be equally divided between them share and share alike. Also I give to Ann Martha and Jane Sisters of the said Thomas Child fifty pounds apiece if they shall be living at the time of my decease otherwise the Legacy or Legacies of her or them the deceased to the Survivor or Survivors of them share and share alike. Also I give to my Cousin Shadrach Child if he shall be living at the time of my decease the sum of twenty pounds but in case of his death the I give that same unto his three sisters Ann Martha and Jane or such of them as shall be living at the time of my decease share and share alike. Also I give to my cousin Solomon Stevens twenty pounds. Also I give to his daughter Martha Stevens Twenty pounds. Also I give to my brother Charles Scott and his wife ten pounds apiece to buy them mourning. Also I give to my Nephew Charles Scott and to Mr James Parker of the Swan at Stanes Bridge and to his wife five pounds apiece. Also I give to Mr Charles Lutas of London Wine Cooper and to his wife ten pounds apiece to buy them mourning. Also I give to my Godson John Lutas son of the said Charles Lutas the sum of Twenty pounds. Also I give to my present servant John Morton twenty pounds. Also I give to my present servant Sarah Lawrence One Years Wages and five pounds. Also I give to Mr Henry Edmond of Richmond Bricklayer ten pounds to buy him mourning. Also I give to twenty five poor persons of the parish of Richmond that shall be housekeepers there at the time of my decease and do not receive alms of the parish forty shillings apiece. All which pecuniary Legacies I do hereby order and direct to be paid within six months next after my decease and whereas by virtue of a power to me reserved in and by the Marriage Settlement made on my said Wife before our intermarriage I am now entitled to the disposition of seven hundred pounds part of the money therein settled upon her after her decease if she shall me survive to such person or persons as shall by my Will and Testament direct and appoint. Now I do hereby give and bequeath and order and direct the same to be disposed of in manner following that is to say to my Sister Ann Wright and my Sister Margaret Laggatt my Nephew George Child my Niece Elizabeth Child my Niece Ann Milbourne my Nephew Phillip Laggatt and my Niece Ann Laggatt one hundred pounds apiece to be paid to them immediately after the decease of my said wife Ann Child. And all the Rest Residue and Remainder of my Worldly Goods and Effects whatsoever I give and bequeath the same unto and amongst my loving wife Ann Child my said brother William Wright my said Brother Phillip Laggatt and I do hereby nominate constitute and appoint my said Wife the said William Wright and the said Phillip Laggatt joint Executors of this my last Will and Testament. In witness whereof I have to the first four sheets of this my will contained in five sheets of paper set my hand and to the last thereof my hand and seal this thirtieth day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and fifty four 1754. This Will was proved at London on the fifth day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and fifty five before the Worshipfull Arthur Collier Doctor of Laws and Surrogate of the Right Worshipfull Sir George Lee Knight Doctor of Laws Master Keeper and Commissary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury lawfully constituted by the oaths of Ann Child Widow the Relict William Wright and Phillip Laggatt the Executors named in the said Will of the deceased to whom Administration was granted of all and singular the Goods and Chattels and Credits of the said deceased they having been first sworn duly to administer the same.
