Archdeaconry Court of Surrey Testatrix: Catherine Aylett of Bermondsey, widow Date of Will: 21 March 1697/8 To Joshua Sherman of Whitechapel, Middlesex, citizen & silk thrower and William Braxton, citizen & scrivener my messuage etc. in or near Grange Yard, Bermondsey in the occupation of Joseph Heaton and John Heaton, tanners and the piece of round adjoining the said messuage (two acres) in the occupation of Joseph and John Heaton now mainly used as a tanyard and tenements now or late in the occupation of Joseph and John and other tenants near the north end of the barn and yard of the Grange of Bermondsey all new erections now built or to be built all held on lease from the Rt Hon Earl of Salisbury as trustees for my daughter Elizabeth Rutter wife of Benjamin Rutter of Bermondsey, leatherdresser for the rest of the term of sixty years in the said lease as per the direction of Elizabeth by will or otherwise and not to be in any way under the control of her husband and if she dies intestate to her children; to my sister Ann Bayesly, widow and executrix twenty pounds; to my grandson William Rutter son of Benjamin two hundred pounds at age twenty one with remainder to my daughter; to my son in law Benjamin Rutter ten pounds for mourning; to my cousin Joshua Sherman and my friend William Braxton above a guinea each for rings; residue to my sister Ann Baysely in trust for my daughter Elizabeth; Elizabeth Rutter to allow her aunt Ann Bayesly ten pounds as long as she shall remain trustee of my estate Witnesses: John Smith; Elizabeth Reeves (X); John Webster servant to William Braxton Codicil: 6 November 1699: Joshua Sherman is lately deceased and the messuage etc. is all settled on William Braxton, and now I am sick and weak; I appoint William Jeffereys of Bermondsey, tanner, snr.
