In the Name of God Amen I Joseph Linington of East 
Cowes in the Parish of Whippingham Isle of 
Wight and County of Southampton Assessor of 
King's Taxes in perfect health mind and memory 
thanks be given unto God calling to mind the mortality 
of my body and knowing that it is Appointed for all men 
once to die do make and ordain this my last Will and 
Testament that is to say Principally and first of all I 
give and recommend my soul into the hands of 
Almighty God that gave it and my I recommend to the 
earth to be buried in decent Christian burial as plain as 
can be alongside my former Wife Sarah nothing 
doubting but at the general resurrection I shall receive 
the same again by the mighty power of God and as 
touching such worldly effects wherewith it hath pleased 
God to bless me in this life I give devise and dispose of 
the same in following manner and form that is to say 
After paying all my just debts I give and bequeath all 
(lands and tenements I have none) my sum or sums of 
money in hand due or coming unto me now hereafter 
first to my oldest Son William Linington I give and 
bequeath one shilling because he has had more than 
the proportional share of money of me before Second 
to my next oldest Son Benjamin Linington I give 
and bequeath the sum of thirteen Pounds for himself 
Wife and Daughter he having had more money of me 
than I can make up For the Younger ones I likewise 
give and bequeath twenty Pounds unto my Son 
Benjamin's Daughter Sarah Linington my 
Grandchild to be paid to her at the age of eighteen 
years unless the money may be wanted to apprentice 
her at an earlier age then to demand it on that account 
and if she should die before the age of eighteen years 
the Father or Mother then living to have the money 
twenty pounds Third I give and bequeath unto my 
oldest Daughter Sarah Wheeler the sum of twenty 
pounds and ten Pounds for herself and Husband for 
mourning and unto her eight Children ten pounds each 
Vizt. Sarah Wheeler the oldest Ann the next oldest 
John the next Barnabas the next Jane the next Mary 
the next Joseph the next and George the youngest to 
be paid unto each of them at the age of eighteen years 
unless before wanted for apprenticeship on that 
occasion to demand it and if either of the eight Children 
should die before the age of eighteen years or 
apprenticeship his or her sum to be divided equal 
between the rest of that family I give and bequeath 
unto my Daughter Sarah Wheeler my Volume of the 
Life of Christ Fourth and unto my youngest Daughter 
Ann Smith I give and bequeath all my household 
goods and furniture Plate linen except some pair of new 
sheets which is to be equally divided between Benjamin 
Linington my Son Sarah Wheeler my Daughter Ann 
Smith my Daughter and John Linington my Son And 
unto Ann Smith and her Husband ten Pounds for 
mourning and my family bible to Ann Smith hoping she 
will take care of it and look upon it as I have done the 
best book ever published And unto her two Sons I give 
and bequeath twenty pounds each William Smith the 
oldest John Smith the youngest to be paid unto them 
at the age of eighteen years unless before wanted for 
apprenticeship and if either shall die before the age of 
eighteen years the other to have the forty pounds my 
church bible I give to one and my testament and 
prayer book unto the other unto William Smith my 
Son in Law I give four volumes of gardening books 
and Spy glass Fifth unto my third oldest Son John 
Linington I give and bequeath thirty five pounds and 
ten pounds for himself and Wife for mourning and my 
watch and unto his five Children ten pounds each Viz 
Sarah Linington the oldest Ann the next oldest Jane 
the next Elizabeth the next and John the youngest to 
be paid unto them at the age of eighteen years unless 
the money be wanted before for apprenticeship then to 
demand it and if either of the five Children shall die 
before the age of eighteen years or apprenticeship that 
part to be divided between the other Children of that 
family Sixth unto my Youngest Son Isaac Linington 
I give and bequeath thirty five pounds and five pounds 
for mourning And unto my Sister Ann Knott I give 
and bequeath five pounds and three pounds for 
mourning if my Sister should die before me that eight 
pounds to go to the stock And at my decease if it 
should be found the Principal should exceed the 
legacies such to be divided between my Sons and 
Daughters Legatees equal and if it should be found not 
sufficient to pay then to deduct a just proportion from 
each legatee My clothes to be divided between my 
Sons and two Sons in Law equally and my remaining 
books in like manner And I do appoint my two 
Daughters Sarah Wheeler and Ann Smith my sole 
Executors of this my last Will and Testament The 
legacies to be paid as soon as my affairs can be settled 
except what is within written the Children to receive 
the interest of their legacies yearly whilst under the 
age of eighteen years the Executors to be paid their 
expences in receiving and paying the same
