Transcription of Probate Copy of the Will of James Oades, Yeoman of Eversley, 
Hampshire
Written 23 Aug 1760
Proved 4 September 1760

In the Name of God Amen I James Oades of Eversley in the County of 
Southampton  Yeoman being of Sound and Disposing Mind and Memory Do make and 
Declare my last Will and Testament as follows I give and Devise all my Freehold and 
Copyhold  Messuages or Tenements Lands and Hereditaments Situate and being in Eversley 
aforesaid or elsewhere within the Kingdom of Great Britain (my Copyhold Estate being 
surrendered to the use of my Will) unto my Son Henry Oades To hold the same unto and to 
the use of my said Son Henry Oades his Heirs and Assigns for ever Subject to and I do hereby 
charge my said Freehold and Copyhold Estates with the payment of all such Debts as I shall 
owe at the time of my Decease and my Funeral and Testamentary Expenses and also with the 
payment of the Several Legacies by me hereafter Given and bequeathed, that is to say, I give 
and bequeath unto my Son Thomas the Sum of Twenty pounds Also to my Daughter Martha. 
the Sum of Thirty pounds And also to my Daughter Joanna the Sum of Thirty five pounds 
And also to my Daughter Mary the Sum of Ten pounds All which said Several Legacies or 
Sums of Money my Will and Desire is may be paid unto them respectively within Twelve 
Months after my Decease but without Interest in the mean time Also all my Personal Estate 
and Effects whatsoever and wheresoever and of what nature or kind soever I give and 
bequeath unto my said Son Henry but also subject to and charged with the Payment of my 
Just Debts and the before mentioned Legacies And I do hereby nominate and Appoint my said 
Son Henry sole Executor of this my Will hereby revoking all former Wills by me made and 
do Publish and Declare this to be my last Will and Testament In Witness whereof I the said 
James Oades the Testator have hereunto set my hand and Seal the Twenty third day of August 
In the year of our Lord One thousand Seven hundred and Sixty James Oades, Signed Sealed 
Published and Declared by the above named James Oades the Testator as and for his last Will 
and Testament in the Presence of us who have Subscribed our names as Witnesses hereto, at 
the request and in the presence of the said Testator John Seymour Jane Mason Thomas Round

This Will was proved at London the fourth Day of September In the year of our Lord One 
thousand Seven hundred and Sixty before the Worshipful Andrew [illegible surname/s] 
Doctor of Laws Surrogate of the Right Worshipful Edward Simpson also Doctor of Laws 
Master Keeper or Commissary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury lawfully constituted by 
the Oath of Henry Oades the Son of the deceased and Sole Executor named in the said Will to 
whom Administration was Granted of all and Singular the Goods Chattels and Credits of the 
said Deceased he having been first Sworn duly to Administer
  The County of Southampton was synonymous with Hampshire.
  The right of holding land by copy of the roll originally made by the steward of the Lord of the Manor?s court.
