This is the last Will and Testament of me John Coker of Portsea in the County of 
Southampton fforeman of the Caulkers in his Majesty's Dock Yard there made when in 
good health and of Sound Mind Memory and Understanding whereby I recommend my 
Soull to God and dispose of my Worldly Estate and Effects in manner following that is to 
say I give and devise all that my Messuage or Tenement with the Appurtenances 
thereunto belonging where I now dwell unto my son Thomas Coker his Heirs and 
Assigns forever I Give and Devise unto the Reverend John Griffin of Portsea aforesaid 
Dissenting Minister and Thomas Eastman of the same Place Cabinet Maker All that my 
Messuage or Tenement with the Land and Appurtenances thereto belonging which I 
lately Purchased of Elizabeth Coker Widow of my late Son Richard Coker deceased 
situate and being in Havant Street aforesaid .....same unto the said John Griffin and 
Thomas Eastman their Heirs and Assigns on the several Trusts and to and for the 
several uses and Purposes hereinafter named that is to say upon Trust that they the 
said John Griffin and Thomas Eastman or the Survivor of them or their Heirs and 
Assigns or the Survivor of them shall and do as soon as reasonably may be after my 
decease sell and dispose of the said Messuage or Tenement and Premises so devised 
to them as aforesaid whether by Public Auction or Private Contract for the most Money 
that can be reasonably had or negotiated for the same And As to the Money arising 
therefrom I do hereby Direct my said Trustees {after reimbursing themselves thereout 
all such Costs Charges and Expences as they shall sustain in the selling thereof)to pay 
and divide the sum unto and between my Sons Thomas Coker and Edward Coker and 
my Daughters Molly Kemp the Wife of James Kemp of Portsea aforesaid Shipwright 
and Dinah Downey the Wife of John Downey aforesaid Tallow Chandler in equal 
Proportions Share and Share alike and it is my Will and I do hereby direct that the 
Receipt or Receipts of my said Trustees or the Survivor of them shall be good and 
sufficient discharge and Discharges to the Purchaser or Purchasers of the said 
Messuage or Tenement so devised to them as aforesaid and that the said Purchaser or 
Purchasers shall not be obliged to.......the Application or be responsible for the 
Application of the aid Purchase Monies or any Part thereof I give and bequeath all and 
singular my Wearing Apparel both Linen and Woollen unto my Sons Thomas Coker and 
Edward Coker to be equally divided between them I give and bequeath unto my son 
Thomas Coker the Mourning Ring which I bought in Remebrance of my late Wife I give 
and bequeath unto my Son Edward Coker the Watch which I some years since lent him 
to and for his own use and benefit I give and bequeath unto my Servant Mary Carver 
the sum of five pounds if she shall be living with me at the time of my decease I give 
and bequeath unto the poor persons who receive the offering Money at the Meeting 
House in ......Street in Portsea aforesaid All such Money as my Executors will be Intitled 
to receive after my decease of such freindly Society called the Caulkers Society in his 
Majesties Dock Yard at Portsmouth of which I am a Member and I do hereby direct that 
this sum shall be paid and divided unto and amongst such poor persons as aforesaid 
within ten days after the same shall be received by my Executors of the Stewards of the 
said Society I give and bequeath the sum of seven hundred pounds Stock in the three 
per cent Consolidated Annuities now standing in my Name in the Books kept by the 
Bank of England unto my Sons Thomas Coker and Edward Coker and my Daughter 
Molly Kemp and Dinah Downey to be equally divided between share and share alike I 
give and bequeath all and singular my Household Goods and ffurniture of Household 
Ready Money....Money Plate Linen and China and all and singular other my Personal 
Estate and Effects not hereinbefore disposed of unto the said Thomas Coker and 
Edward Coker Molly Kemp and Dinah Downey to be equally divided between them 
Share and Share alike And I do hereby nominate constitute and appoint the said John 
Griffin and Thomas Eastman Executors of this my last Will and Testament hereby 
revoking and making void all former and other Wills and Testaments by me at any time 
heretofore made In Testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal that is to 
say my hand to the three preceding Sheets hereto annexed and my hand and seal to 
this fourth and last sheet this eighth day of November and in the year of our Lord one 
thousand seven hundred and ninety eight John Coker
