In the Name of God Amen. I JOHN BAKER of Kingsley in the County of 
Southampton Yeoman being Aged and inform in Body altho of sound mind and 
memory do make and declare these presents to contain my true last will and 
Testament as follows. First I give and bequeath unto my Grandson JOHN BAKER 
Son of WILLIAM BAKER deceased a Legacy or Sum of two hundred pounds 
payable in six months time next after my decease by my Executor hereinafter 
named. Also I give and bequeath unto ANN wife of WILLIAM SMITHER and to 
WILLIAM KNIGHT and RICHARD KNIGHT and the survivors of them (being 
the children of my daughter ANN KNIGHT Widow deceased) the sum of two 
hundred pounds equally to be divided between them and to be paid by my 
Executor within six months next after my decease. Also I give and bequeath unto 
all and every of my Grand Children and Great Grand Children which shall be 
living at the time of my death the sum of five pounds a piece to be paid unto them 
or their legal representatives respectively within twelve months after my decease. 
Also I give and devise unto my Son RICHARD BAKER his heirs and Assigns 
forever (except as undermentioned) all that my Messuage Tenement and farm in 
which I now dwell situate and being in Kingsley aforesaid and all the Lands, 
Buildings, Hereditaments, ? Members and Appurtenances to the same belonging 
lying partly in Kingsley aforesaid and partly in Selborne in the said County of 
Southampton Subject nevertheless to and I do hereby charge the same with the 
payment of one Annuity or yearly Rent Charge of twenty pounds of lawful money 
of Great Britain unto my beloved wife ANN for and during the term of her natural 
life by equal Quarterly payments without making any deduction or abatement 
thereout for taxes or on any other amount whatsoever the first payment thereof to 
begin and be made within  three Months next after my decease. And if it shall 
happen that the said Annuity or yearly Rent charge of twenty pounds or any part 
thereof shall be behind or  unpaid by the space of twenty days next after either the 
said days of payment whereon the same ought to be paid as aforesaid that then and 
at all times after and as often as it shall so happen it shall and may be lawful to and 
for my said wife and her Assigns into and upon all and singular the said farm 
Lands and Hereditaments or into any part or parcel thereof with the Appurtenances 
to enter and distrain for the said Annuity or Yearly Rent Charge of twenty pounds 
and all arrears thereof and the Distress and Distresses then and there found to take 
lead drive and carry away and the same to detain and keep in their or their custody 
and possession until She my said Wife or her Assigns shall be paid and satisfied 
the said Annuity or Yearly rent charge and all arrears thereof together with all the 
costs and charges of such Distress or Distresses or otherwise to sell and dispose 
thereof according to Law and out of the Money arising by such sale and disposition 
to pay and satisfy her and themselves the said Annuity or Yearly Rent Charge of 
twenty pounds and all arrears thereof together with all her and their costs and 
charges in and about such Distress and Distresses. I also give and Assign over unto 
my said Wife for the term of her natural life without impeachment or waste or any 
molestation by my Heir or Executor the free use and privileged to enjoy as her own 
separate Apartments clear of all Rent or Taxes such convenient Rooms and parts of 
the said Dwelling House as she may chuse to inhabit and lodge in which I direct 
my said son RICHARD or his son RICHARD in case he shall happen to be in 
possession of the said premises to permit my said wife quietly to have and hold the 
same accordingly provided that she takes and accept the same together with the 
said Rent Charge or Annuity in lieu and satisfaction of all Dower and thirds which 
she might otherwise claim out off my Real Estate (but not otherwise). All the rest 
residue and remainder of my Estate real and personal money and securities Goods 
Chattels and Effects whatsoever I give Devise and bequeath unto my said Son 
RICHARD BAKER his heirs Executors Administrators and Assigns for ever 
Subject to the payment thereout of all my just Debts Legacies aforesaid and all 
funeral Expenses which I desire may be punctually Discharged in due time after 
my decease according to Law provided always and if fit shall happen that my said 
Son RICHARD BAKER shall happen to die in my life time and in such case I give 
and devise the said Messuage Tenement and farm wherein I now dwell with the 
Lands and Appurtenances thereunto belonging as also the said residue and 
remainder of my said Estate and Effects unto my Grandson RICHARD BAKER 
his Heirs Executor Administrators and Assigns for ever subject to the payment of 
the said Annuity and of my Debts Legacies and Funeral Expenses. Lastly I appoint 
my said Son RICHARD BAKER Sole Executor of this my Last Will and 
Testament but in case my said Son RICHARD BAKER shall die in my lifetime 
then I appoint my said grandson RICHARD BAKER Executor of this my Will 
hereby revoking every other Will by me herebefore made. In Witness I have to this 
my Will contained in this and the preceding Sheet of paper set my hand and Seal 
(that is to say) to the first Sheet my hand and to this last Sheet my hand and Seal 
this ninth day of October in the year of Our Lord One thousand seven hundred and 
seventy six and in the sixteenth year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord King 
George the third John Baker (SEAL) Signed Sealed Published and declared by the 
said JOHN BAKER  the Testator as and for his last Will and Testament in the 
presence of us who in his presence and at his request have subscribed our names as

This Will was proved at London the seventh day of  March in the year of Our Lord 
One thousand seven hundred and eighty before the Right Worshipful Peter Culvert 
Doctor of Law’s Master Keeper or Commissary of the Prerogative Court of 
Canterbury lawfully constituted by the oath of RICHARD BAKER the Sole 
Executor named in the said Will to whom Administration was granted all and 
Singular and credits of the  deceased he having been first sworn by Commission 
Duly to Administer.
