19-years old Miss Joanna Wood was the Carnival Queen for Woking's
eighteenth Whirl, in July 1987. Her two attendants were Alison Joy and Marita Gorgone.
To win the title, Joanna beat 17 other finalists from 52 entrants.
Her prizes for winning were £300 & an engraved silver goblet, holiday
voucher, champagne dinner for 2 at the Bridge Barn, 2 tickets for
Phantom of the Opera, a £30 fashion voucher, and a modelling portfolio. Joanna was a keen footballer, playing for Chertsey Town FC's ladies team; in 1988, they won through to the Hertz five-a-side Championships national finals.
