Miss Lesley C Powell, a hairdresser, aged 17, was the Carnival Queen for Woking's first Whirl
in July 1969. Her two attendants were Jill Gosden, a 16-years old
schoolgirl (who would win
the competition the following year) and Caryl Higgins, a fashion sales
representative. For winning the competition, Lesley received a £25 cash prize. Two years earlier, when she was 15, Lesley had been the Carnival Queen for the Guildford Show; In 1970, she came third in Weston-Super-Mare's 'Modern Venus' competition. The same year she won Goal magazine's 'Goal Girl 70' competition. The finalists all paraded in the kit of their favourite teams; Lesley, being a Spurs supporter, wore their kit and afterwards was called and congratulated by Spurs' and England forward, Martin Peters. In 1971, she was banned from entering a similar football supporters beauty queen contest as she had previously won money prizes.
