Miss Jill Gosden, aged 17, was the Carnival Queen for Woking's
second Whirl, in July 1970. Her two attendants were
Louise Alexander and Katherine Wicks (who would win the competition the following year).
Jill beat 27 other finalist to claim the crown. Her prize for
winning was £25 and a dress and hair-do for carnival day. Jill had been runner-up the previous year when she had also won the 'Miss Looe' contest in Cornwall. Jill went on to have a career as a glamour model, firstly as Jill Gosden and then under her married name of Jilly Johnson. She was one of the first of the Sun's 'page 3 girls'. Although not reported at the time when she was Miss Woking (a practice which was to be normal in the late 1970s and early 1980s), her vital statistics were widely publicised during her modelling days. For several years, Jill returned to future competitions as a judge. Hair: Blonde Eyes: Blue Height: 5' 7" Vitals: 34B-22-34 In 1977, with fellow glamour model Nina Carter, she formed the pop duo Blonde on Blonde. They were more successful overseas (especially in Japan) than in the UK, where they struggled to be taken seriously. Their biggest hit was a disco cover, in 1979, of Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love". The duo disbanded later that year, when Jill became disenchanted. After retiring from modelling, Jill forged a new career as a writer. At the age of 60 and then a grandmother, Jill was approached by Janet Reger and showed she still had it by doing a lingerie shoot for them. |
