In around 1900, there was an idea in certain quarters that the population should be prepared in the event of war.
This went as far as suggesting that even women should be taught to shoot. The idea was pushed by Lord Frederick Roberts, who became the last Commander-in-Chief of the Forces on 3 January 1901. Somewhat surprisingly, this was received quite enthusiastically among women of
the middle and upper classes. Small rifle ranges, especially for women, began to spring up all over the country.
In Byfleet, land for a range on the slopes of St George's Hill was donated by Mr Egerton, a relative of the Duke of Devonshire.
