Home page BISLEY is a parish and village, 6 miles north-west from Woking, 2 north from Brookwood station, 8 south-west from Chertsey, in the Western division of the county, Godley hundred, union and county court district of Chertsey, archdeaconry of Surrey, rural deanery of Woking, and diocese of Winchester. The church of St. John the Baptist is a stone building, of the twelfth century, in the Pointed Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, and north aisle, with bell-cot containing 3 bells. In 1873 the church was enlarged and restored: in the eastern end is a three-light memorial stained window, representing "The Crucifixion" in the centre, with St. John the Baptist on the right and St. Anne upon the left. The register dates from the year 1561. The living is a rectory, yearly value £188, with 30 acres of glebe land, in the gift of W. F. Eaton, esq, and held by the Rev. Walter Eaton, M.A. of Merton College, Oxford. There are charities of about £38 per annum. A large building was erected in 1868, called the Bisley Refuge Farm School, for homeless and destitute boys; the estate comprises about 121 acres, which is mostly cultivated by the boys, who are also taught various useful trades; a |
second building (Shaftesbury school) was erected in 1873 to seat a similar number, total averages 240 boys. A chapel was built in 1874 for the schools, to seat 400. The Earl of Onslow is lord of the manor, and Col. Marshall and the Bisley Refuge Farm School are the chief landowners. The soil is loam; subsoil, clay, gravel and sand. The chief crops are wheat, oats, beans and swedes. The area is 922 acres; rateable value, £1,424; the population in 1871 was 494, most of whom are engaged in agriculture.
