Aka Combers

Cumbers was a house and tenement, situated at the northern edge of Bisley Green. In the Tithe Award the 'house and garden' was measured at 1 acre 2 roods and 5 perches; on the OS map at 1.526 acres.

Cumbers was owned, from before 1733, by William Fisher of Crondall. In October 1756 he sold it to Robert Clarke, also of Crondall. 14 years later, in 1770, Robert Clarke passes the property on to Joshua Longley.

In June 1809, Hannah Collyer, wife of John Collyer of Horsell, bought Cumbers from Joshua Longley for £150. When Hannah died in 1835, it was inherited by her son William. In May 1856, William Collyer was behind with his mortgage payments and Cumbers passed to Thomas Hockley, who presumably rented it out as John Slyfield and his family are shown as the occupants in the 1861 census.

In 1868 Ann Slyfield purchased Cumbers from Thomas Hockley for £150. John Slyfield and his family are still shown as the occupants in the 1871 census.
