BISLEY is a parish and small village, 4 miles north-west from Woking, 6 miles north-west from Woking village, 2 north from Brookwood station, 8 south-west from Chertsey, in the North Western division of the county, Godley hundred, Chertsey petty sessional division, union and county court district , archdeaconry of Surrey, rural deanery of Woking, and diocese of Winchester. The church of St. John the Baptist is a stone building of the 12th century, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave and north aisle, west porch and a bell-cot over the west entrance, containing 3 bells: in 1873 the church was enlarged and restored: at the east end is a memorial window. There are 150 sittings, all being free. The register dates from the year 1561. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £300 with 20 acres of glebe land and house, in the gift of tMrs. George Pyemont Smith., and held since 1886 by the Rev. Joseph Cater. There are charities of about £38 per annum. The Bisley Refuge Farm School was erected in 1868, for 150 homeless and destitute boys; the estate comprises about 125 acres, which is mostly cultivated by the boys, who are also taught various useful trades; a second building (the Shaftesbury School) was erected in 1873 for a similar number, total averages 297 boys. A chapel, seating 400, was built for the schools in 1874. The Earl of Onslow is lord of the manor and Colonel Marshall and the Bisley Refuge Farm School are the chief landowners. The area is 922 acres; rateable value, £1,804; the population in 1881 was 650, most of whom are engaged in agriculture.
