The
General Court Baron of The Right Honorable Arthur George Earl of Onslow
Lord of the said Manor there held in and for the said Manor on Wednesday the tenth
day of October in the seventh year of the reign of our Sovereign Lady Victoria
by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland Queen defender
of the Faith and in the Year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty three

Will of Isaac Gosden
The Homage aforesaid being sworn and
charged on their Oath do say and present that Isaac Gosden late one of the
Copyhold or Customary Tenants of the said Manor and whose death was presented
at the Court Baron held in and for the said Manor on the twenty third day of July
one thousand eight hundred and forty two duly made and published his last Will
and Testament in writing bearing date the tenth day of February one thousand
eight hundred and forty two the probate of which was produced and read in open
Court in the words following “This is the
last Will and Testament of me Isaac Gosden of the Parish of Bisley in the
County of Surrey Farmer as follows (that is to say) I give and devise unto my Son Isaac Gosden
and his heirs all those my copyhold pieces or parcels of land containing about
nine acres situate lying and being within and held of the Manor of Bisley in
the said county of Surrey and now in my own occupation To hold the same with
the appurtenances unto my said Son Isaac Gosden his heirs and assigns for ever
at the Will of the Lord and according to the custom of the said manor of Bisley
subject nevertheless to the payment of the Mortgage debt or sum of One hundred
and fifty pounds now due and owing from me to James Lipscomb on a mortgage
thereof together with all interest which may be due thereon at my death and I
direct that the said sum of one hundred and fifty pounds and interest shall be
charged on my said Copyhold Estate exclusively and in exoneration of my
personal and all other my Estates And
also subject to and I do hereby charge the same with the payment of one Annuity
or clear yearly sum of four pounds and ten shillings unto my Wife Sarah Gosden
and her assigns for and during the term of her natural life by two equal half
yearly payments the first payment thereof to commence and be made at the end of
six calendar Months next after my decease and a proportionate part thereof to
be paid up to the day of her death and I give devise and bequeath the said
annuity or yearly sum of four pounds and ten shillings unto my said Wife Sarah Gosden
and her assigns for and during the term of her natural life accordingly”
Admittance of Isaac Gosden
Now at this Court upon the third proclamation came here into Court
in his proper person the said Isaac Gosden the Son and humbly prayed to be
admitted tenant to All that one piece or parcel of Land called or known by the
name of Widecroft Common field and containing by estimation four acres And also
all that piece or parcel of Land called or known by the name of South Earsh
common field and containing by estimation one acre And also all that piece or
parcel of Land called or known by the name of Palmers field and containing by
estimation one acre and an half And also all that piece or parcel of Land called
or known by the name of Burcroft common field containing by estimation two
acres And also all that piece or parcel of Land called or known by the name of
Burn Mead and containing by estimation one acre within and held of the said
Manor which came into the hands of the Lord of this Manor on the death of the
said Isaac Gosden the father To whom the Lord of the Manor aforesaid by his
Steward aforesaid granted the same and delivered seizin thereof by the Rod To hold to the said Isaac Gosden the Son his
heirs and assigns for ever (Subject nevertheless and charged and chargeable as
in the Will of the said Isaac Gosden the father is mentioned) by copy of Court Roll
at the Will of the Lord according to the custom of the said Manor by the yearly
rent of Three shillings and three pence Heriot when it shall happen Suit of
Court and other services and customs therefore formerly due and of right
accustomed And so he was admitted Tenant thereof in form aforesaid Gave to the Lord for a Fine for such his
admittance as appears in the Margin [£20] and his fealty was respited.
Conditional Surrender Stephen Eacott to Charles Howard
The Homage aforesaid also present a certain Surrender taken out of
Court and since the last Court in the words following to wit “Manor of Bisley
in the County of Surrey. Be it remembered that on the twenty eighth day of January
in the sixth year of the reign of our Sovereign Lady Victoria by the Grace of
God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland Queen defender of the
faith and in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty three Stephen
Eacott of Bisley in the County of Surrey Yeoman one of the copyhold or
customary Tenants of the said Manor came before us William Glazier and William
Eacott two other of the Copyhold or customary Tenants of the said Manor in his
proper person and
(in consideration of the Sum of four
hundred pounds of lawful money of Great Britain to him lent and advanced by
Charles Howard hereinafter described by way of loan and at interest upon the
hereditaments and premises hereinafter mentioned out of Court did surrender
into the hands of the Lord of the said Manor by the Rod and by the acceptance
of the said two copyhold or customary tenants All that one close of Land called
Hunger Hills containing by estimation one Acre and an half and two acres of land
lying in the Common field called South Earsh and one acre of land lying in the
Common field called Burcroft and also
one Mead called Newbridge Mead containing by estimation one Acre And an acre
and an half in Westburn Mead and half an acre of Meadow in Churchburn Mead And
also all that one Meadow called Bisley Mead adjoining to Newbridge (containing
by estimation one Acre more or less) to which he the said Stephen Eacott was
admitted on the death of William Eacott his father at a General Court Baron held
for the said Manor the sixteenth day of December one thousand eight hundred and
forty two And also all that one
Messuage with the appurtenances at Gateshed end with the Barn Garden Orchard
and about one acre and an half of Land to the same adjoining and belonging and
also all that quarter of an acre of Land with the appurtenances in Bisley
within this Manor late Richard Freelands whereon a Cottage did lately stand to
which he the said Stephen Eacott was admitted on the Surrender of John Knowls
Farmer and James Stedman Farmer at the
said General Court Baron held on the said sixteenth day of December one
thousand eight hundred and forty two And
also all the estate right title interest use trust property claim and demand
whatsoever of him the said Stephen Eacott of in and to the same To the only proper use and behoof of Charles
Howard of the parish of Chobham in the said County of Surrey Grocer his heirs
and assigns for ever at the Will of the Lord according to the custom of the
said Manor. Provided always and upon this condition nevertheless that if the
said Stephen Eacott his heirs executors administrators or assigns do and shall
well and truly pay or cause to be paid unto the said Charles Howard his
executors administrators or assigns the full and just sum of four hundred
pounds of lawful money of Great Britain current in England on the twenty eighth
day of July next ensuing the said Surrender and which will be in the present
year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty three Together with
interest for the same after the rate of five pounds per centum per annum without
any deduction or abatement whatsoever for or by reason or on account of any
matter cause or thing whatsoever Then the
said surrender to be void and of no effect else shall remain in full force and

note: Be it remembered that on the fourteenth
day of November one thousand eight hundred and fifty one Alice Howard Calib
Howard Charles Howard and Isaac Hodd Executors of Charles Howard in this
Surrender named did acknowledge that they had been paid and satisfied All
Principal and Interest Monies and all demands due on this Surrender And the said Alice Howard Caleb Howard
Charles Howard and Isaac Hodd did by Writing under their hands of that date impower
authorise and desire the Steward of this
Manor to enter this acknowledgement of having received such satisfaction upon
the Court Rolls or Books of the said Manor accordingly Witness my Hand Joseph Hockley]
Absolute Surrender William Woods Sen.r to William Woods Jun.r
The Homage also present a certain other Surrender taken out of
Court and since the last Court to wit on the third day of May one thousand
eight hundred and forty three Whereby William Woods the elder of Knaphill in
the County of Surrey Gentleman one of the Copyhold or Customary Tenants of the
said Manor in consideration of the natural love and affection which he had and
bore unto and for his son William Woods the younger of Knaphill aforesaid
Farmer did surrender into the hands of the Lord of the said Manor by the Rod
and by the acceptance of James Steptoe and Edmund Vincent two other Copyhold or
Customary Tenants of the said Manor according to the custom of the said Manor All that scite of a Messuage and parcel of
Arable Land containing by estimation one acre and an half be the same more or
less late the estate of Peter Quennell deceased and before then the estate of
George Martin deceased and since of Sarah Moore lying and being in the Parish
of Bisley within the said Manor And also all that piece or parcel late parcel
of the Waste of the said Manor of Bisley lying near Riding Hill containing by
estimation eighty rods more or less lately enclosed by James Hill and upon
which he erected and set up A Cottage or tenement together with the said Cottage
or tenement and the appurtenances To the
use and behoof of the said William Woods the younger his heirs and assigns for
ever.
Admittance of William Woods Jun.r
Now at this Court upon the first proclamation came here into Court
in his proper person the said William Woods the Son and humbly prayed to be
admitted tenant to All that the said Scite of a Messuage and parcel of Arable
Land containing by estimation one acre and an half be the same more or less
with the appurtenances in pursuance of the said Surrender To whom the Lord of the Manor aforesaid by his Steward aforesaid
granted the same and delivered Seizin thereof by the rod To
hold to the said William Woods the Son
his heirs and assigns for ever by Copy of Court Roll at the Will of the
Lord according to the custom of the said Manor by the yearly rent of six pence
Heriot when it shall happen Suit of Court and other services and customs
therefore formerly due and of right accustomed and so he was admitted Tenant
thereof in form aforesaid Gave to the Lord
as a fine for such his admittance as appears in the Margin [£2 7s 3d] and his
fealty was respited.
Admittance of the same
Also at this Court upon the first proclamation came here into Court
in his proper person the said William Woods the Son and humbly prayed to be
admitted Tenant to All that the said
piece or parcel of Land lying near
Riding Hill containing by estimation eighty rods more or less together with the
Cottage or Tenement thereupon erected and the appurtenances in pursuance of the
said Surrender To whom the Lord of
the Manor aforesaid by his Steward aforesaid granted the same and delivered
Seizin thereof by the Rod To hold to the said William Woods the
Son his heirs and assigns for ever by
Copy of Court Roll at the Will of the Lord according to the custom of the said
Manor by the yearly rent of one penny Heriot when it shall happen Suit of Court
and other services and customs therefore formerly due and of right accustomed
and so he was admitted Tenant thereof in form aforesaid Gave to the Lord as a fine for such his
admittance as appears in the Margin [£3 3s] and his fealty was respited.
Absolute Surrender John Knowls and James Stedman to James Bedford
The Homage also present a certain other Surrender taken out of
Court and since the last Court to wit on the fifth day of July one thousand
eight hundred and forty three Whereby John Knowls of Horsell in the said County
of Surrey Farmer and James Stedman of Horsell foresaid Farmer (The Devisees in
trust named in the Will of William Smith late of the parish of Bisley in the
said County Farmer deceased) two of the Copyhold or Customary Tenants of the
said Manor in consideration of the Sum of one hundred pounds to them paid by
James Bedford of Knaphill in the parish of Woking in the County of Surrey
Grocer did surrender into the hands of the Lord of the said Manor by the Rod
and by the acceptance of the Steward of the said Manor and according to the
custom of the said Manor All that piece
or parcel of Arable Land containing by admeasurement four acres and three Roods
be the same more or less lying in the parish and Manor of Bisley in the County
of Surrey abutting on the Highway leading from Guildford to Bagshot on the east
and on the Freehold Land lately sold by the said John Knowls and James Stedman
to John Deacon on the north as the same is now marked and stamped out and is to
be divided from the said Freehold Land by a fence to be made and for ever
hereafter maintained by and at the expence of the said James Bedford his heirs
and assigns and which said piece or parcel of Land is part and parcel of premises
described on the Court Rolls of the said Manor as All those Copyhold Lands
Arable Meadow and Pasture with the appurtenances containing by estimation
nineteen Acres more or less in the Parish of Bisley To the only proper and absolute use and
behoof of the said James Bedford his heirs and assigns for ever.
Admittance of James Bedford
Now at this Court upon the first proclamation came here into Court
in his proper person the said James Bedford and humbly prayed to be admitted
tenant to All that the said piece or parcel of Land containing by admeasurement
four acres and three roods be the same more or less being in the parish and
Manor of Bisley in pursuance of the said Surrender To whom the Lord of the Manor aforesaid by his Steward aforesaid
granted the same and delivered seizin thereof by the Rod To
hold to the said James Bedford his heirs and assigns for ever by Copy of
Court Roll at the Will of the Lord according to the custom of the said Manor by
the yearly rent to be apportioned Heriot Suit of Court and other services and
customs therefore formerly due and of right accustomed and so he was admitted
Tenant thereof in form aforesaid Gave to
the Lord as a fine for such his admittance as appears in the Margin [£6] and
his fealty was respited.
Absolute Surrender John Knowls and James Stedman to John Mersh
The Homage also present a certain other Surrender taken out of
Court and since the last Court to wit on the fifth day of July one thousand
eight hundred and forty three Whereby John Knowls of Horsell in the said County
of Surrey Farmer and James Stedman of Horsell foresaid Farmer (The Devisees in
trust named in the Will of William Smith late of the parish of Bisley in the
said County Farmer deceased) two of the Copyhold or Customary Tenants of the
said Manor in consideration of the Sum of one hundred pounds to them paid by John
Mersh of Woking in the said County Farmer did surrender into the hands of the
Lord of the said Manor by the Rod and by the acceptance of the Steward of the
said Manor and according to the custom of the said Manor All those seven pieces or parcels of Arable
Land and one piece or parcel of Meadow Land containing altogether six acres one
Rood and seven perches lying dispersedly in the Common Fields and Meadows of
the Parish of Bisley in the County of Surrey as follows one piece lying in
Burcroft Common Field numbered 85 on the Map of the said parish and containing
thirty four perches one other piece lying in Burcroft common Field numbered 87
on the said Map containing thirty seven perches one other piece lying in
Burcroft common Field numbered 92 on the said Map containing two roods and
twenty four perches one other piece lying in Burcroft common field numbered 97
on the said Map containing one rood and thirty Nine perches one other piece
lying in Widecroft common Field numbered 177 on the said plan containing one
acre two roods and nineteen perches one other piece lying in Widecroft common field
numbered 168 on the said plan containing one rood and twelve perches one other
piece lying in Neltro common field numbered 344 on the said plan containing one
acre and seventeen perches and one piece lying in Churchburn Mead numbered 124
on the said plan containing one acre two roods and twenty nine perches all
which said pieces or parcels of Land are part and parcel of premises described
on the Court Rolls of the said Manor as all those Copyhold Lands Arable Meadow
and pasture with the appurtenances containing by estimation nineteen acres more
or less in the parish of Bisley To the only proper and absolute use and behoof
of the said John Mersh his heirs and assigns for ever.
Admittance of John Mersh
Now at this Court upon the first proclamation came here into Court
in his proper person the said James Bedford and humbly prayed to be admitted
tenant to All those seven pieces or parcels of Land containing altogether six acres
one rood and seven perches lying dispersedly in the said parish and Manor of
Bisley in pursuance of the said Surrender To
whom the Lord of the Manor aforesaid by his Steward aforesaid granted the
same and delivered seizin thereof by the Rod
To hold to the said John
Mersh his heirs and assigns for ever by Copy of Court Roll at the Will of the
Lord according to the custom of the said Manor by the yearly rent to be
apportioned Heriot Suit of Court and other services and customs therefore
formerly due and of right accustomed and so he was admitted Tenant thereof in
form aforesaid Gave to the Lord as a
fine for such his admittance as appears in the Margin [£9 16s 6d] and his
fealty was respited.
Apportionment of Quit rent
At this Court the yearly rent of three Shillings and four pence due
and payable to the Lord of this Manor for all those All those Copyhold Lands
Arable Meadow and pasture with the appurtenances containing by estimation
nineteen acres more or less in the parish of Bisley was apportioned as follows
to wit for all those two pieces or parcels of Meadow Land containing together
by admeasurement three acres three roods and nineteen perches And also all that
piece or parcel of Arable Land called the Shoulder of Mutton field containing
one acre two roods and three perches to which James Hone was admitted the
twenty ninth day of July one thousand eight hundred and forty three one
shilling and one penny and for the said piece or parcel of Arable Land
containing by admeasurement four acres three roods to which James Bedford hath
now been admitted one shilling and for the said seven pieces or parcels of
Arable Land containing altogether six acres one rood and seven perches to which
the said James Bedford has been now admitted one shilling and three pence
