Conditional Surrender James Bedford to Thomas Hockley
Be it remembered that on the twenty second day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty five James Bedford of Knaphill in the said County of Surrey Shopkeeper one of the Copyhold or Customary Tenants of the said Manor personally came before Joseph Hockley Gentleman Steward of the Courts of the said Manor out of Court and in consideration of the sum of three hundred pounds of lawful money of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland of English value and currency to him the said James Bedford in hand well and truly paid by the Reverend Thomas Hockley of Shiplake in the County of Oxford Clerk Hath Surrendered and Doth surrender into the hands of the Lord of the said Manor by the rod and by the acceptance of the said Steward and according to the custom of the said Manor All that Copyhold Close or parcel of Arable Land situate at Bisley aforesaid containing by estimation five acres and seven perches more or less late in the occupation of Joseph Bedford afterwards of Stephen Steptoe and now of James Bedford together with the messuage or tenement thereon lately erected and built and now in the occupation of William Steptoe to which said premises the said James Bedford was admitted Tenant at a Court held in and for the said Manor on the thirtieth day of April one thousand eight hundred and forty one And also all that piece or parcel of Arable Land containing by admeasurement four acres and three roods be the same more or less lying in the parish and Manor of Bisley in the County of Surrey abutting on the Highway leading from Guildford to Bagshott on the east and on the freehold land lately sold by John Knowls and James Stedman to John Deacon on the north as the same is now marked and stamped out and is to be divided from the said freehold land by a fence to be made and for ever hereafter maintained by and at the expence of the said James Bedford his heirs and assigns and which said piece or parcel of land is now known by the name of the Hen and Chickens field and to which last mentioned premises he the said James Bedford was admitted tenant at a Court Baron held in and for the said Manor on the fourth day of October one thousand eight hundred and forty three  And the reversion and reversions remainder and remainders rents issues and profits thereof And all the estate right title interest property possession claim and demand whatsoever of him the said James Bedford of in to or out of the same premises and every part and parcel thereof To the only proper use and Behoof of the said Thomas Hockley his heirs and assigns for ever according to the custom of the said Manor Provided always and upon this condition nevertheless that if the said James Bedford his heirs executors administrators or assigns do and shall well and truly pay or cause to be paid unto the said Thomas Hockley his executors administrators or assigns the full and just sum of three hundred pounds together with interest for the same after the rate of five pounds for one hundred pounds for a year of lawful money of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland of English value and currency upon the twenty second day of May next ensuing the date hereof without any deduction or abatement to be made or taken out of the same on any account whatsoever and without fraud or further delay  Then this Surrender to be void and of no effect otherwise to be and remain in full force and virtue ~ James Bedford  This Surrender was taken the day and year first above written by the acceptance of me Joseph Hockley Steward - In the presence of Edmund Vincent   Received on the day and year first above written of and from the above named Thomas Hockley the sum of three hundred pounds being the consideration money above mentioned to be paid by him to me. £300 James Bedford ~ Witness  Edmund Vincent – George White
[Margin Note: Be it remembered that on the twenty sixth day of May one thousand eight hundred and fifty eight Thomas Hockley in this Surrender named did acknowledge that he had that day been satisfied all principal and interest monies due and owing upon and by virtue of this Surrender And the said Thomas Hockley did by writing under his hand of that date authorize and empower the Steward of this Manor to enter his acknowledgement of such satisfaction on the Court Rolls or Books of the said Manor accordingly.  Witness my Hand Joseph Hockley Steward]
