Bisley Manor Court Roll May 1920
At a Special Court Baron of The Right Honorable Richard William Alan Earl of Onslow Lord of the said Manor held for the said Manor on the ________ day of May in the Eleventh year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord King George the Fifth and in the year of our Lord One thousand nine hundred and twenty Before Frederic Ferdinand Smallpeice Gentleman Chief Steward there.
Death of James Hill
At this Courtcame here into Court James Hill the Younger of Reidon Hill Bisley in the County of Surrey by Yalden Knowles his Attorney and informed the said Steward that James Hill (his father) late one of the copyhold or customary tenants of this Manor who held to him and his heirs by copy of Court Roll at the will of the lord according to the custom of the said Manor First All that copyhold or customary messuage or tenement called Radsell’s Grove with the barn buildings orchards gardens and all the lands thereto belonging containing by estimation Five acres more or less in the Parish of Bisley formerly in the occupation of William Slaughter since of John Hill and late of James Hill the Elder that was to say The South end of the said Messuage the garden before it the orchard behind it half the barn the West end half the yard and Four plots of ground one against the house two below that and one against the Common Southward containing about Two and a half acres more or less And Secondly The several parts and parcels hereinafter described of all that the said copyhold messuage and hereditaments called Radsell’s Grove that is to say The North end of the said messuage a small piece of ground before it half the barn half the yard South end and garden behind the barn two plots of ground the West side against the other a road to it from the yard about Two and a half acres more or less also the pigsty against the Common died since the last General Court to wit on the Tenth day of August One thousand eight hundred and ninety nine so thereof seised whereupon a heriot of the best beasts became due to the Lord of this Manor but none were seized because the said James Hill the Elder had no live beast at the time of his death.
His Will
And the said James Hill the Younger by his said Attorney produced to the said Steward the Probate of the last Will and Testament of the said James Hill the Elder bearing date the ninth day of May One thousand eight hundred and eighty seven which was proved in the Principal Probate Registry on the Fifth day of May One thousand nine hundred Whereby after making certain specific devises and bequests Testator gave and devised all that his copyhold messuage or tenement garden lands and hereditaments containing altogether Five acres or thereabouts situate at Bisley aforesaid and then in his own occupation unto his son James Hill his heirs and assigns subject nevertheless and upon the express condition that his said son James Hill should permit Testator’s wife Mary Hill to occupy the same copyhold hereditaments or to receive the rents and profits thereof during the term of her life And also subject and Testator thereby charged the same copyhold hereditaments with the payment by his said son James Hill after the death of Testator’s wife to each of his daughters Mary Catherine Hill and Sarah Ann Hill an annuity or clear yearly sum of Five pounds apiece during her life And Testator appointed his said wife Mary Hill and his said daughter Sarah Ann Hill Executrices of his said Will.
Admission of James Hill 1st Copy
Now at this Court upon the first proclamation came here again into Court James Hill the Younger and humbly prayed to be admitted tenant to All those the said copyhold hereditaments firstly hereinbefore described which came into the hands of the Lord of this Manor on the death of the said James Hill the Elder To whom the lord of the Manor aforesaid by his Steward aforesaid granted the same and delivered seisin thereof by the Rod To hold to the said James Hill the Younger his heirs and assigns for ever by copy of Court Roll at the will of the lord according to the custom of the said Manor by the yearly apportioned rent of one penny heriot when it shall happen suit of Court and other services and customs therefor formerly due and of right accustomed subject nevertheless to the condition and charge mentioned in the said Will of the said James Hill the Elder And so he was admitted tenant thereof in form aforesaid Gave to the lord as a fine for such his admittance as appears in the margin [Fine after] and his fealty was respited
