At this Court upon the second Proclamation came here into Court in his Proper Person William Hammond one of the Sons of Macey otherwise Mercy Hammond Widow a Copyhold or Customary Tenant of this Manor whose death was Presented at the last General Court Baron holden for this Manor and Produced in Court the probate Copy of the last Will and Testament of the said Macey otherwise Mercy Hammond bearing date the twenty seventh day of April one thousand seven hundred and seventy two Whereby she devised as follows (to Wit) “also I Give and devise unto my said son William Hammond and his Heirs all that my Copyhold Messuage or Tenement situate in the Parish of Bisley in the said County called Bonnells otherwise Edmeads which hath also been surrendered to the use of my Will together with the Barns Edifices Gardens Orchards Curtilages and the three Closes or parcels of Land thereto adjoining and belonging and the several other Closes or Parcels of Land called by the several names of the Long Close Hunger Hills four acres of Land in the Common Field called Wide Croft two acres of Land in the Common Field called South Earsh One acre of Land lying in the Common Field called Barcroft and two acres of Land in the Common Field called Neltro One Mead called Newbridge Mead one acre and an half in Westburn Mead and half an acre in Churchburn mead and also one Meadow called Bisley Mead To have and to hold unto my said Son William Hammond his heirs and assigns for ever Provided also that in case my said Son William shall dye before his attainment of the age of twenty one Years without lawful issue of his Body Then I Give and devise the same unto my said Son Henry Hammond his heirs and assigns for ever Provided also further that in case both my said Sons shall die without lawful issue of their bodies before their attainment of twenty one years Then I Give and devise all and singular my said Freehold and Copyhold Messuage or Tenement Lands Hereditaments and Premises with their several and respective appurtenances unto my Mother Macey Smith her heirs and assigns for ever Subject nevertheless and I do charge the several Premises hereinbefore devised to my said Sons respectively with the payment of the sum of three pounds each to my Servant Elizabeth Chapman for and during the term of her natural life to be paid to her by equal half yearly payments” Whereupon the said William Hammond prayed of the Lord of this Manor to be admitted Tenant to All that one Messuage or Tenement in Bisley called Bonnells otherwise Edmeads with the Barns Edifices Gardens Orchards Curtilages and three Closes of Land to the said Messuage adjoining and belonging containing by estimation seven acres One Close of Land called Long Close containing by estimation one acre One Close of Land called Hunger Hills containing by estimation one acre and an half and four acres of Land lying and being in the Common Field called Wide Croft and two acres of Land lying in the Common Field called South Earsh and one acre of Land lying in the Common Field called Barcroft and two acres of Land lying in the Common Field called Neltro abutting on the Land formerly of Sarah Millest on the South Lands of John Hone on the North and Land of John Goreing on the East and also one Mead called Newbridge Mead containing by estimation one acre and an acre and an half in Westburn Mead and half an acre of Meadow in Churchburn Mead which came into the hands of the Lord of this Manor on the death of the said Marcy otherwise Mercy Hammond To whom the Lord of the Manor aforesaid by his Steward aforesaid granted the same and delivered seizin thereof by the Rod To hold to the said William Hammond his Heirs and Assigns for ever by Copy of Court Roll at the will of the Lord according to the Custom of the said Manor by the yearly Rent of five shillings and five pence Heriot when it shall happen suit of Court and other services and Customs therefore formerly due and of right accustomed and so the said William Hammond was admitted Tenant thereof in form aforesaid Gave to the Lord for a Fine as appears afterwards and his Fealty was respited.
And again came here into Court in his Proper Person the said William Hammond and Prayed to be admitted Tenant to All that one Meadow called Bisley Mead adjoining to Newbridge containing by estimation one acre more or less which came into the hands of the Lord of this Manor on the death of the said Macey otherwise Mercy Hammond To whom the Lord of the Manor aforesaid by his Steward aforesaid granted the same and delivered seizin thereof by the Rod To hold to the said William Hammond his Heirs and Assigns for ever by Copy of Court Roll at the will of the Lord according to the Custom of the said Manor by the yearly Rent of six pence Heriot when it shall happen suit of Court and other services and Customs therefore formerly due and of right accustomed and so the said William Hammond was admitted Tenant thereof in form aforesaid Gave to the Lord for a Fine for this and his said former estate as appears in the Margin [£45] and his Fealty was respited.
The Homage Present that Elizabeth Chapman mentioned in the above Will of the said Macey otherwise Mercy Hammond departed this life in the lifetime of the said Testatrix.
At this Court upon the second Proclamation came here into Court in his Proper Person John Hill Eldest Son and next heir of John Hill the Younger a Copyhold or Customary Tenant of this Manor whose death was Presented at the last General Court Baron holden for this Manor and Prayed to be admitted Tenant to All that Messuage or Tenement with the Outhouses Gardens and Appurtenances thereunto belonging situate within this Manor heretofore in the possession of John Towers and since of John Stiles which came into the hands of the Lord of this Manor on the death of the said John Hill his father To whom the Lord of the Manor aforesaid by his Steward aforesaid granted the same and delivered seizin thereof by the Rod To hold to the said John Hill the Son his Heirs and Assigns for ever by Copy of Court Roll at the will of the Lord according to the Custom of the said Manor by the yearly Rent of four pence Heriot when it shall happen suit of Court and other services and Customs therefore formerly due and of right accustomed and so he was admitted Tenant thereof in form aforesaid Gave to the Lord for a Fine for such his admittance as appears afterwards and his Fealty was respited.
And immediately after his said admittance he the said John Hill the Son (being Present here in Court in his Proper Person) surrendered into the hands of the Lord of the said Manor by the rod and by the acceptance of the aforesaid Steward according to the Custom of the said Manor All that the said Messuage or Tenement with the Outhouses Gardens and Appurtenances To the Use and behoof of Sarah Hill widow the Mother of the said John Hill the Son and her Assigns for and during the Term of her natural life and from and immediately after her decease To the Use and behoof him the said John Hill the Son his Heirs and assigns for ever Whereupon the said Sarah Hill and also the said John Hill her Son being both Present here in Court in their Proper Persons humbly prayed of the Lord of this Manor to be admitted tenants to the said Messuage or Tenement and Premises with the Appurtenances in pursuance of the said Surrender To whom the Lord of the Manor aforesaid by his Steward aforesaid granted the same and delivered seizin thereof by the Rod To hold to the said Sarah Hill and her assigns for and during the term of her natural life and from and immediately after her decease To hold to the said John Hill the Son his Heirs and Assigns for ever by Copy of Court Roll at the will of the Lord according to the Custom of the said Manor by the yearly Rent of four pence Heriot when it shall happen suit of Court and other services and Customs therefore formerly due and of right accustomed and so they were admitted Tenants thereof in form aforesaid and the Fine for their said several admittances was set in Court at the sum of five pounds and five shillings to be paid to the said Steward aforesaid situate in the Town of Guildford in the County of Surrey on Tuesday the twenty ninth day of September next and their Fealties were respited.
The Homage Present a certain surrender taken out of Court and since the last Court in the words following to (wit) “Manor of Bisley in the County of Surrey Be it remembered that on the tenth day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and one James Trigg of Wokeing in the County of Surrey Yeoman a Copyhold or Customary Tenant of the said Manor came before Joseph Pickstone Gentleman Steward of the said Manor and surrendered and by these Presents Doth surrender into the hands of the Lord of the said Manor by the Rod according to the Custom of the said Manor and by the acceptance of the said Steward All that one Messuage or Tenement and three Closes of Land containing by estimation two acres more or less formerly in the Possession of Henry Hayward to which Premises the said James Trigg was admitted at a Special Court Baron held for the said Manor on the fifth day of February one thousand seven hundred and ninety six on the surrender of John Stillwell and the reversion and reversions remainder and remainders thereof and all the estate right title interest claim and demand of him the said James Trigg therein and thereto To the only proper and absolute use and behoof of Joseph Bedford of Naphill in the Parish of Wokeing in the said County of Surrey Blacksmith his heirs and assigns for ever and to and for no other use intent or purpose whatsoever James Trigg. This Surrender was taken the day and year first above written by me Joseph Pickstone Stew.d”
Now at this Court the first proclamation was made for the said Joseph Bedford or any other person or persons who hath or have a right to be admitted to the said Messuage or Tenement and three Closes of Land with the appurtenances which came into the hands of the Lord of this Manor on the surrender of the said James Trigg to come into Court and take the same out of the hands of the Lord of the said Manor but no one came Whereupon the first proclamation and default are here inrolled.
At this Court came here into Court in his Proper Person James Stovell late of Shepperton in the County of Surrey one of the Copyhold or Customary Tenants of this Manor and surrendered into the hands of the Lord of the said Manor by the Rod and by the acceptance of the Steward aforesaid according to the Custom of the same Manor All that Scite of a Messuage and parcel of arable Land containing by estimation one acre and an half be the same more or less late the estate of Peter Quennell deceased and before then the estate of George Martin deceased and since of Sarah Moore lying and being in the Parish of Bisley within the said Manor To the Use and behoof of William Woods the younger of Naphill in the Parish of Wokeing in the County of Surrey Brickburner his heirs and assigns for ever Now at this Court the first proclamation was made for the said William Woods or any other person or persons who hath or have a right to be admitted to the said Scite of a Messuage and Parcel of Land with the appurtenances which came into the hands of the Lord of this Manor on the surrender of the said James Stovell to come into Court and take the same out of the hands of the Lord of the said Manor but no one came Whereupon the first proclamation and default are here inrolled.
Also at this Court came here again into Court in his Proper Person the said James Stovell and surrendered into the hands of the Lord of the said Manor by the rod and by the acceptance of the Steward aforesaid according to the Custom of the said Manor All that Cottage Turf House and Garden thereunto belonging formerly Henry Carters abutting on the Common on the North and East parts and the Lands formerly Thomas Morlens on the West and South situate in the Parish of Bisley within the said Manor And also all that Copyhold Messuage or Tenement called or known by the name of Staple Brooks with the Barn and all Buildings Orchard Garden Yards and one Close of Meadow Land by estimation two acres more or less and one acre of arable Land To the only Use and behoof of James Loveland of Bisley in the County of Surrey yeoman his heirs and assigns for ever Now at this Court came here into Court in his Proper Person the said James Loveland and prayed to be admitted tenant to the said Cottage Turfhouse and Garden with the appurtenances surrendered by the said James Stovell as aforesaid To whom the Lord of the Manor aforesaid by his Steward aforesaid granted the same and delivered seizin thereof by the rod To hold to the said James Loveland his Heirs and Assigns for ever by Copy of Court Roll at the will of the Lord according to the Custom of the said Manor by the yearly Rent of six pence Heriot when it shall happen suit of Court and other services and Customs therefore formerly due and of right accustomed and so the said James Loveland was admitted tenant thereof in form aforesaid Gave to the Lord for a Fine for this and his said former estate as appears afterwards and his Fealty was respited.
And again came here into Court in his Proper Person the said James Loveland and prayed to be admitted tenant to the said Messuage or Tenement called Staple Brooks and to the said Close of Meadow Land and the acre of arable Land and other the premises thereto respectively belonging with the appurtenances also surrendered by the said James Stovell as above mentioned To whom the Lord of the Manor aforesaid by his Steward aforesaid granted the same and delivered seizin thereof by the rod To hold to the said James Loveland his Heirs and Assigns for ever by Copy of Court Roll at the will of the Lord according to the Custom of the said Manor by the yearly Rent of two pence half penny Heriot when it shall happen suit of Court and other services and Customs therefore formerly due and of right accustomed and he was admitted Tenant thereof in form aforesaid Gave to the Lord as a Fine for his admittance to this and the said former estate as appears in the Margin [£7 10s] and his Fealty was respited.
At this Court came here into Court in his Proper Person Samuel Suddeby one of the Copyhold or Customary Tenants of the said Manor and surrendered into the hands of the Lord of the said Manor by the rod and by the acceptance of the Steward aforesaid according to the Custom of the said Manor All that Copyhold Messuage or Tenement with the Garden thereto belonging containing by estimation one rood formerly belonging to Blanch Wisdom since to John Robinson and late Collyer’s To the Use and behoof of William Woods the younger of Naphill in the parish of Wokeing in the County of Surrey Brickburner his Heirs and assigns for ever Upon Condition nevertheless to be void upon payment by the said Samuel Suddeby his Heirs Executors administrators or assigns unto the said William Woods his Executors Administrators or assigns of the sum of seventeen pounds and ten shillings together with lawful interest for the same on the twentieth day of January now next ensuing.
At this Court came here into Court in his proper person James Living one of the Copyhold or Customary Tenants of this manor and surrendered into the hands of the Lord of the said Manor by the rod and by the acceptance of the Steward aforesaid two acres of land part of a parcel of Land called Miles Grove within this Manor and which said two acres adjoin Port Lane on the East the Common Field called Neltro on the North The Copyhold Land of William Walden called Wheat Leaz on the West and two acres other part of Miles Grove on the South at this Court surrendered to the use of William Walker And also one acre of Land other part of the said Parcel of Land called Miles Grove and which acre adjoined to Miles Green on the South To Port Lane on the East To an acre of Land other part of Miles Grove at this Court surrendered by the said James Living to the Use of James Hone on the west and to the said two acres now surrendered to the use of the said William Walker on the North To the only Use and behoof of James Stedman of Bisley in the County of Surrey yeoman his heirs and assigns for ever which said James Stedman being present here in Court in his proper person prayed to be admitted tenant to the said two acres part of Miles Grove and to the said one acre other part of Miles Grove in Pursuance of the said surrender To whom the Lord of the Manor aforesaid by his Steward aforesaid granted the same and delivered seizin thereof by the rod To hold to the said James Stedman his Heirs and Assigns for ever by Copy of Court Roll at the will of the Lord according to the Custom of the said Manor by the yearly Rent of one Penny half penny as now apportioned at this Court Heriot when it shall happen suit of Court and other services and Customs therefore formerly due and of right accustomed and so the said James Stedman was admitted Tenant thereof in form aforesaid Gave to the Lord as a Fine for such his estate therein to be held as appears in the Margin [£3 10s] and his Fealty was respited.
Also at this Court came here into Court in his proper person James Living one of the Copyhold or Customary Tenants of this Manor and surrendered into the hands of the Lord of this Manor by the Rod and by the acceptance of the aforesaid Steward Two acres of Land part of a Parcel of Land called Miles Grove within this Manor and which said two acres adjoin Port Lane on the East The Copyhold Land of William Walden called Wheat Leaz on the West Two acres other part of Miles Grove at this Court surrendered by the said James Living To the Use of James Stedman on the North and to an acre other part of Miles Grove at this Court surrendered by the said James Living To the Use of James Hone on the South To the only Use and behoof of William Walker of Bisley in the County of Surrey Husbandman his heirs and assigns for ever Which said William Walker being present here in Court in his proper person Prayed to be admitted Tenant to the said two acres part of Miles Grove and to the said one acre other part of Miles Grove in Pursuance of the said surrender To whom the Lord of the Manor aforesaid by his Steward aforesaid granted the same and delivered seizin thereof by the rod To hold to the said William Walker his Heirs and assigns for ever by Copy of Court Roll at the will of the Lord according to the Custom of the said Manor by the yearly rent of one Penny as now apportioned at this Court Heriot when it shall happen suit of Court and other services and Customs therefore formerly due and of right accustomed and so the said William Walker was admitted Tenant thereof in form aforesaid Gave to the Lord as a Fine for such his estate to be held in the premises as appears in the Margin [£2 10s] and his Fealty was respited.
Also at this Court came here into Court in his Proper Person James Living one of the Copyhold or Customary Tenants of this Manor and surrendered into the hands of the Lord of this Manor by the rod and by the acceptance of the aforesaid Steward One Acre of Land part of a Parcel of Land called Miles Grove within this Manor and which said acre adjoins to Miles Green on the South To the Copyhold Land of William Walden called Wheat Leaz on the West To other part of Miles Grove at this Court surrendered by the said James Living to the use of James Stedman on the East To the only Use and behoof of James Hone of Naphill in the parish of Horsell in the County of Surrey Cordwainer his Heirs and assigns for ever Which said James Hone being Present here in Court in his proper person prayed to be admitted Tenant to the said one acre of Land in Pursuance of the said surrender To whom the Lord of the Manor aforesaid by his Steward aforesaid granted the same and delivered seizin thereof by the rod To hold to the said James Hone his Heirs and assigns for ever by Copy of Court Roll at the will of the Lord according to the Custom of the said Manor by the yearly rent of one half penny as now apportioned at this Court Heriot when it shall happen suit of Court and other services and Customs therefore formerly due and of right accustomed and so the said James Hone was admitted Tenant thereof in form aforesaid Gave to the Lord as a Fine for such his estate to be held in the premises as appears in the Margin [£1 5s] and his Fealty was respited.
At this Court the yearly rent of three pence due and payable for the whole of the said parcel of Land called Miles Grove was apportioned as follows (to wit) For the three acres to which the said James Stedman hath at this Court been admitted one Penny half penny For the two acres to which the said William Walker has now been admitted one Penny and for the acre to which the said James Hone hath now been admitted one half penny.
