The General Court Baron of The Right Honorable Arthur George Earl of Onslow Lord of the said Manor held in and for the said Manor on Friday the twenty ninth day of May in the twentieth year of the reign of our Sovereign Lady Victoria by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland Queen Defender of the Faith and in the year of our Lord One Thousand eight hundred and fifty seven Before Joseph Hockley Gentleman Steward there.

Admittance of George Drury

At this Court upon the third proclamation came here into Court in his proper person George Drury of Guildford in the County of Surrey Auctioneer and humbly prayed to be admitted Tenant to All that scite of a Messuage and one parcel of land containing by estimation one acre and a half be the same more or less late the estate of Peter Quennell and before then the estate of George Martin deceased and since of Sarah Moore lying in the Parish of Bisley Which came into the hands of the Lord of this manor on the Surrender of Mary Collyer To whom the Lord of the Manor aforesaid by his Steward aforesaid granted the same and delivered Seizin thereof by the rod  To hold to the said George Drury his heirs and assigns for ever by Copy of Court Roll at the Will of the Lord according to the custom of the said Manor by the yearly rent of six pence heriot when it shall happen Suit of Court and other services and customs therefore formerly due and of right accustomed And so he was admitted Tenant thereof in form aforesaid  Gave to the Lord as a fine for such his admittance as appears in the Margin [£2 5s] and his fealty was respited.

 

Admittance of Thomas Hockley

Also at this Court upon the third proclamation came here into Court Thomas Hockley (by Edward Charles Quilley his Attorney) and humbly prayed to be admitted Tenant to All that Messuage called Cumbers with the buildings Garden and Orchard and land to the said Messuage adjoining containing by estimation One acre be the same more or less with the Appurtenances situate lying and being in the Parish of Bisley within this manor formerly the Estate of James Miles Which came into the hands of the Lord of this manor on the Surrender of William Collyer To whom the Lord of the Manor aforesaid by his Steward aforesaid granted the same and delivered Seizin thereof by the rod  To hold to the said Thomas Hockley his heirs and assigns for ever by Copy of Court Roll at the Will of the Lord according to the custom of the said Manor by the yearly rent of one penny halfpenny heriot when it shall happen Suit of Court and other services and customs therefore formerly due and of right accustomed And so he was admitted Tenant thereof (by his said Attorney) in form aforesaid  Gave to the Lord as a fine for such his admittance as appears in the Margin [£7 10s] and his fealty was respited.

 

Admittance of Stephen Steptoe

Also at this Court upon the third proclamation came here into Court in his proper person Stephen Steptoe and humbly prayed to be admitted Tenant to All that Copyhold Cottage or Tenement with the buildings Turf House garden and orchard or Backside and all other the appurtenances situate lying and being between Cowshot and Staveck Lane in Bisley within the said Which came into the hands of the Lord of this manor on the death of Sarah Steptoe To whom the Lord of the Manor aforesaid by his Steward aforesaid granted the same and delivered Seizin thereof by the rod  To hold to the said Stephen Steptoe his heirs and assigns for ever by Copy of Court Roll at the Will of the Lord according to the custom of the said Manor by the yearly rent of four pence heriot when it shall happen Suit of Court and other services and customs therefore formerly due and of right accustomed And so he was admitted Tenant thereof in form aforesaid  Gave to the Lord as a fine for such his admittance as appears in the Margin [£12] and his fealty was respited.

 

Admittance of Jane Cooke

Also at this Court upon the third proclamation came here into Court Jane Cooke late the Widow of Edmund Vincent and now the Wife of Charles Cooke (by the same Charles Cooke her Attorney) and humbly prayed to be admitted tenant to All those four fields or Closes of arable land called Wheat leas containing by admeasurement fourteen Acres two roods and seventeen Perches be the same more or less lying in the parish and manor of Bisley in the County of Surrey abutting upon Miles Green there save and except a scite of about eighty rods Surrendered to John Slann Which came into the hands of the Lord of this manor on the death of Edmund Vincent To whom the Lord of the Manor aforesaid by his Steward aforesaid granted the same and delivered Seizin thereof by the rod  To hold to the said Jane Cooke and her assigns for and during the term of her natural life by Copy of Court Roll at the Will of the Lord according to the custom of the said Manor by the yearly rent of Ten pence heriot when it shall happen Suit of Court and other services and customs therefore formerly due and of right accustomed And so she was admitted Tenant thereof by her said Attorney in form aforesaid  Gave to the Lord as a fine for such her admittance as appears in the margin [£22] and her fealty was pardoned.

 

Conditional Surrender John Baker to William Matthews

The Homage aforesaid being sworn and charged on their Oath do present a certain Surrender taken out of Court and since the last Court in the words following to wit “The Manor of Bisley in the County of Surrey. Be it remembered that on the twenty sixth day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty six John Baker of Sheets Farm in the parish of Woking in the County of Surrey Husbandman one of the copyhold or customary Tenants of the said Manor came before Joseph Hockley Gentleman Steward of the said Manor and in consideration of the Sum of One hundred and fifty Pounds of lawful money of Great Britain to the said John Baker in hand well and truly Paid by William Matthews of Frimley in the said County of Surrey Yeoman did out of Court Surrender into the hands of the Lord of the said Manor by the Rod and by the acceptance of the said All those three acres of land whereupon a messuage has been erected with the appurtenances formerly Part of the waste of the said manor lying at Hassell Hall between Cowshot and Staveak lane in Bisley within the said Manor formerly in the tenure or occupation of Robert Goodener his undertenants or assigns since of James Faggetter and John Tyler afterwards of Abraham Groves and now of Charles Boylett (to all which said premises the said John Baker was admitted tenant on the twelfth day of July instant) Together with all houses outhouses buildings Commons and Common of pasture trees ways passages waters watercourses rights members Privileges appendages and appurtenances to the said hereditaments and premises belonging or in any wise appertaining And the reversion and reversions remainder and remainders rents issues and profits thereof and of every Part thereof And all the Estate Right Title interest inheritance use trust property possession benefit claim and demand whatsoever of the said John Baker of in to or out of the said hereditaments Premises and every part thereof To the use of the said William Matthews his heirs and assigns for ever by copy of Court Roll at the will of the Lord according to the custom of the said Manor at the rents and services herefore due and of right accustomed  But Subject Nevertheless to and upon this express Condition nevertheless that if the said John Baker his heirs executors or administrators do and shall well and truly pay or cause to be paid unto the said William Matthews his executors administrators or assigns the full and just sum of One hundred and fifty pounds sterling with interest for the same after the rate of five pounds Per Centum Per Annum to be Computed from the day of the date of this Surrender on or before the twenty sixth day of January next without any deduction or abatement whatsoever Then this surrender is to be void and of none effect or else it is to remain in full force and virtue  The X mark of John Baker Taken and accepted the day and year first above written by me  Joseph Hockley Steward  Received on the day and year first above written of and from the above named William Matthews the sum of One hundred and fifty pounds being the Consideration money above mentioned to be paid by him to me £150  The X mark of John Baker Witness Mark Smallpiece Sol.r Guildford”   

[Margin note:  Be it remembered that on the eleventh day of June one thousand eight hundred and fifty nine John Williams Mathews in this Surrender named did acknowledge that he had received of and from John Baker in this Surrender also named all principal and Interest monies due and owing to him upon the above recited Surrender and the said William Matthews did by writing under his hand of the above date direct and require the Steward of this Manor to enter satisfaction thereof on the Court Rolls of the said Manor accordingly  Witness my hand  Joseph Hockley]

 

Death of James Loveland

The Homage also present that James Loveland late one of the Copyhold or Customary Tenants of this manor who held to him and his heirs by Copy of Court Roll at the will of the Lord according to the custom of the said manor All that Parcel of ground containing by estimation one acre and an half more or less called Bisley Mead by the yearly rent of _______ Heriot when it shall happen Suit of Court and other services and customs therefore formerly due and of right accustomed  Died since the last Court so thereof seized Whereupon a heriot to wit the best live beast of the said James Loveland became due to the Lord of this manor and that a Cow was seized and compounded for with the executors.

 

1st Proclamation on Death of James Loveland

Now at this Court the first proclamation was made for the heir at law of the said James Loveland or any other person or Persons who hath or have a right  to be admitted to All that Parcel of ground containing by estimation one acre and an half more or less called Bisley Mead within this manor Which came into the hands of the Lord of this Manor on the death of the said James Loveland to come into Court and take the same out of the hands of the Lord of the said Manor but no one came Whereupon the first Proclamation and default are here inrolled.
