The first British census took place in 1801. This and the ones that followed in 1811, 1821 and 1831 did not record data about individuals, but merely statistics about each parish. The amount of raw data that survives for each parish varies, with very little information sometimes being available.

In 1841 Names, ages and occupations were recorded for individuals but, over the age of 15, ages were only recorded as multiples of 5, rounded down - so someone recorded as 30 could actually be aged between 30 and 34 (assuming they both knew their age and told the truth). From 1851, exact ages are given and the relationship to the head of the household was also recorded.

The 1881 census can be searched on-line at the Church of the Latter Day Saints site. LDS 1881 Census

The 1901, 1911 and 1921 censuses can be searched on-line at a number of pay sites.

Censuses later than 1921 are not yet available to the public, being closed for 100 years after the year they were taken; The next census is that of 1951; the 1931 census records being destroyed during the Blitz and no 1941 census being taken because of the Second World War.
