Biography:
Edwin Cecil Smith was born, in West Meon, Hampshire, on 5 February 1888. He was the son and
second child of Henry William, a baker, and Louisa Lovell (née Reffold).

After leaving school, Edwin worked as a grocer’s assistant in West Meon.

In April 1912, Edwin married Harriett Mary Mant of St John’s, Woking. They lived in Knaphill and
had a son and a daughter.

Edwin Cecil Smith fell ill during training and died at Catterick Bridge, Yorkshire, on 10 May 1916.
He is buried in the churchyard of St John’s church, Hipswell, Yorkshire.
