Biography:
William Arthur May was born in 1895, in St John’s, Woking.  He was the son and sixth child of George William, a bricklayer, and Ellen (née
Newman). He had five brothers and five sisters.

On leaving school, William was employed as a golf caddy.

William enlisted on 7 September 1914 with The King’s Royal Rifle Corps.

William Arthur May was twice wounded whilst fighting in France, in the foot and in the spine.  He died, from the spinal wound, in a London
hospital, on 27 November 1918.  He is buried in St John’s Cemetery, Woking.
