Biography:
Alfred Charles Dawson was born on 2 September 1886, in Hendon, Middlesex, the son and eldest of seven children of Alfred, a domestic gardener, and Emma Louise (née Dunham).

By 1890, Alfred and his family had moved to Pirbright, Surrey.

On leaving school, Alfred was employed as a gardener.
Alfred joined the Royal Navy, aged 16, on 30 January 1903. He stood 5 feet
3¾ inches tall; his complexion was des-cribed as ‘fair’; he had brown eyes and
brown hair.

Starting as a Dom 3C (presumably Domestic 3rd class), Alfred was promoted
to Officers’ Cook 2nd class in October 1907, and to Officers’ Cook 1st class
four years later. In 1909, he was described as 5 feet 5 inches tall and, in 1915,
5 feet 4½ inches (when his complexion was described as ‘sallow’).

Alfred died in the Royal Naval Hospital, Haslar, on 21 March 1920, age 33.

Alfred Charles Dawson is buried, in a CWGC grave, in St John’s Cemetery,
Woking, Surrey.
