Biography:
Edwin William Burvill was born on 4 January 1887, in Lower Halstowe, Kent.  He was the eldest of four sons and two daughters  of Edwin, labourer, and Mary (née Moss).  After leaving school, Edwin worked as a general labourer.  In 1909, he married Gwynet
Jennings, taking on her four year old daughter.  In 1914, Gwynet provided Edwin with a son.

Edwin joined The Queen's (Royal West Surrey) Regiment in 1915.  He disembarked in France on 25 November.

On 1 September 1916, during the Battle of the Somme, 8th Battalion moved from the reserve trench to relieve 8th Battalion, The
Royal Kent Regiment in the front-line trenches in Delville Wood.  Over the next four days, they were subjected to heavy artillery
bombardment.

Edwin William Burvill was killed on 4 September 1916.

His final resting place is unknown; his name, with others of his regiment,
appears on Pier or Faces 5 D or 6 D of the Thiepval Memorial.

The Thiepval Memorial, the Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, bears the names of
more than 72,000 officers and men of the United Kingdom and South African forces who
died in the Somme sector before 20 March 1918 and have no known grave.

The memorial was built between 1928 and 1932 and unveiled by the Prince of Wales, in
the presence of the President of France, on 1 August 1932.
